A nice package.

Uriah Heep as a legendary band with an extensive back catalogue needs no extensive introduction. Formed in London in the late 60´s, the band has sold more than 30 million albums, had hit singles in the 70´s and has kept going albeit with many line-up changes. The band is still a big name and sells out large venues in the UK and more significantly worldwide. This album is a compilation which provides a great introduction to the 90´s version of the band; namely, Bernie Shaw (vocals), Mick Box (guitar), Lee Kerslake (drums), Trevor Bolder (bass) and Phil Lanzon (keyboards).

The compilation is in three parts; the best tracks of the 1995 album ‘Sea Of Light’ and the 1998 album ‘Sonic Origami’ and the band´s best known tracks recorded live at the Live Music Hall, Cologne in 1994. The album name is a combination of two of the included song titles and is in effect the primer for anyone wanting to hear the Uriah Heep of the 90´s. The songs contained in this compilation carry on the band´s legacy with Mick Box´s incisive signature guitar work and lavish helpings of Hammond organ from Phil Lanzon. The tracks from ‘Sea Of Light’ are bombastic and very keyboard rich, starting off with the soaring ‘Against The Odds’ which sounds like a meeting between Deep Purple and Jim Steinman. The classic guitar and organ riff of ‘Universal Wheels’ is a joy to hear following a quiet keyboard intro and in fact the musicality of the whole album is apparent early on. Bernie Shaw´s vocals are superb throughout with an exceptionally strong top register and his classic vibrato shining though particularly on the song ‘Words In The Distance’.

The songs from ‘Sonic Origami’ produced by Pip Williams (Status Quo, The Moody Blues) are more progressive and include the standout tracks ‘Between Two Worlds’ and ‘I Hear Voices’. There are some quieter moments in the form of the lengthy ballad ‘Shelter From The Rain’. The studio part of the album finishes with ‘Everything In Life’ which starts off in top gear with the pace not abating until the final note. The album concludes with a very tight and faultless set of their most popular songs. These songs of course include ‘The Wizard’, ‘Gypsy’, ‘Lady In Black’ and inevitably finishes with ‘Easy Livin’’. Of particular note are Bernie Shaw´s vocals which are exceptionally strong especially when he sings of his feelings for the gypsy in the passage between ‘The Wizard’ and ‘Gypsy’.

In all, a nice package (with its alchemy inspired artwork) for new fans and a live set alone worth the money for existing fans who are completists.
