Call it stoner rock, call it retro rock, I just call it great rock n roll plain and simple.

f like me you have a love for seventies rock then Stone Axe could well be your cup of tea. Taking influences from the likes of Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and even the Black Crowes, the band offer a rowdy yet disciplined style of delivery to their material.

The spirit of Bon Scott and Alex Harvey is channelled through Dru Brinkenhoff’s quite eccentric vocals in ‘We Still Know its Still Rock n Roll’ and it’s a wonderful display of original song writing that screams for attention. Tony Reed offers a fine slab of hard rocking guitar on ‘Live for the Day’ and despite its subdued pace it still tastes as potent as moonshine. You could be forgiven for thinking ‘These Were the Golden Years’ was an unreleased Thin Lizzy song as it’s that close in delivery, but not at the expense of becoming a parody. Unfortunately you only get a taste of the instrumental ‘One More Time Before I Die’ before its all over in a mass of The Who inspired drum rolls and guitar work: all very exciting indeed.

This being a deluxe re-issue of their second album we get a bonus disc of vinyl only and assorted bits and this is where it gets exciting. If you love Cream then ‘SWLABR’ complete with off the wall lyrics will float your boat or maybe the Sabbath inspired ‘Shine On’ or ‘When I Came Down’ will take you on the ride you’re looking for.

Any band having the audacity to name a song ‘’Rhinoceros’’ and include a damn fine drum solo gets my respect that’s for sure! But Stone Axe can just as easily float along on a sea of melancholy as ‘For All That Fly’ finely displays before descending into darker waters with The Doors influenced ‘Slice of Darkness’.We finish with ‘Transmissions pt II’ which is like a soundtrack to a funeral march through a fog filled graveyard!

Call it stoner rock, call it retro rock, I just call it great rock n roll plain and simple, and it cries out for your attention!
