Michael Schenker Group - Capitol, Hannover (Germany) - May 15th 2012

15th of May and it’s unbelievably cold in Germany for this time of year. So what’s the best way to find a remedy? Damn right: go to a rock-show! So I jumped on my bike, the streets were slippery, wet and packed, and rode till I finally arrived at the venue. First thing I did as soon as I arrived was getting a beer!

Meeting up with my friends Vossi and Juergen from the band MAD MAX, we had a nice chat before the support band would enter the stage. The venue wasn’t as full as I expected it to be – after all it’s Michael’s hometown! And let’s ask one question: where the hell have all the young AOR fans and electric-guitar-kids gone? The average age was the mid 40s! Being 22, I felt like a child. Kinda sad, isn’t it?

I stood at the bar when the support act from Manchester opened the evening. Fury UK has already played support for numerous big rock bands and was always described as great band to warm up the crowd. Actually in the beginning most of the fans in the audience just kept on standing there, arms crossed, slightly nodding with the beat while the trio tried really hard to entertain them. A sustaining double-base of drummer Martin McNee, the very fast guitar riffs and the rather perishing vocal parts by Chris Appleton were accompanied by his brother Luke unremittingly hammering on his base-guitar. For my ears this band is something I don’t need again – but that’s a matter of taste I guess.

After a pretty long break finally the first chords of ‘Into the Arena’ resounded from above, lights were turned off and white mist covered the slightly purple illuminated stage. The “beast” woke up when the former Scorpions-members Hermann Rarebell (drums) and Francis Buchholz (bass) stepped out into the spotlight. The audience in Hannover always welcomes members (ex or not-ex) of “their” band with all their love. Then Wayne Findlay crossed the stage to take his place behind the keys, always carrying his poison green Dean-guitar. Finally the wizard himself entered the scenery, dressed in a leather-vest, base-cap, skinny-fit jeans and damn colorful sneakers, working his black and white Dean Flying-V. The crowd gave him a very loud and warm welcome. It’s been a while since he played in his hometown and Hannover was so happy to see their “God” again. The show opened all instrumentally until Mr Doogie White ran on the stage and the band launched into ‘Armed and Ready’.

“It's gonna be really dangerous here tonight - we have three Scorpions on stage,” so Doogie told us. And yeah, that’s just how the night turned out, haha.

The crowd was hot and ready to rock and the guys on stage tried their best to fulfill all expectations. Seeing this line-up play together meant a lot to most of the people around ‘cause I’d bet on my life that at least 80% of them were raised by those guys’ music and for sure hadn’t seen them play together! What I really liked was the mixture of the songs. The brand-new track ‘Before the Devil Knows You're Dead’ is a new-age masterpiece by the Michael Schenker Group but unfortunately only one of two songs from the new album ‘Temple of Rock’ that were played that evening. Phenomenal rock-songs like ‘Another Piece of Meat’, ‘Cry for the Nations’ and ‘Assault Attack’ were included in the set-list just as the old UFO-evergreens ‘Lights Out’, ‘Shoot Shoot’ and ‘Rock Bottom’, and the hymn itself, ‘Rock You Like a Hurricane’. The crowd was in a thrill of ecstasy for almost two hours and I’m just glad the heat didn’t rise any higher as it was unbelievably hot in the Capitol. I guess the bar made some pretty good sales that night, ha.

Doogie did a great job – even though I have to admit that I think his voice is perfect for Rainbow but sometimes rather perishing and way too clear for MSG. This turned out clearly for me when Michael “Vossi” Voss was invited to sing the fifth song, ‘Hanging On’ (the second new song from ‘Temple of Rock’) and the P.A. suddenly spit out vocals besides Michael Schenker’s guitar-blast. I’ve seen MSG in Manchester in 2011 with Vossi on vocals and honestly, it fits better. But again it might just be a matter of taste. Nevertheless Vossi rocked his soul out and he caught the audience immediately – even with a new song! Respect…

What I really have to stress at this point is that the guys really seemed to have fun together, even Michael was grinning from time to time and of course Wayne and Francis were fooling around anyway. Herman the German appeared to be so glad to play with that line-up that whenever I looked at him he was smiling behind his drums. Michael played so many different guitars – each more beautiful than the one before – and all of them so, so perfectly! Damned, that guy’s really a wizard on the six-string! And Doogie White… yeah, seeing Doogie White was awesome for me! He rocked the stage like a little hurricane and made the crowd freak out.

As a last fragment of one whole huge rock’n’roll-diamond the band closed the evening with a fulminating fireworks of ‘Holiday’, ‘Blackout’ and ‘Doctor Doctor’.

Enlightened by this experience I left my bike at the venue as it was raining like hell broke loose and had some more beers with Mr. Herman Rarebell, Wayne Findlay, Vossi and some friends at the bar instead. What a fan-fuckin-tastic evening!
