Title

A dose of dirty, sweaty, grimy rock’n’roll.

This new German trio describe themselves as ‘Psychobilly-meets-metal with a heavy dose of the blues’, and it pretty much sums them up to a tee. If you imagine a mix of Motorhead and ZZ Top then you’re just about there. They were formed by guitarist Henny Wolter (Thunderhead, Primal Fear, Sinner) and drummer Klaus Sperling (Freedom Call, Primal Fear), and adding long term friend Oimel Larcher (Fast Eddie Clarke’s Bastards) on bass and vocals. With his whisky soaked gravel laden voice and huge beard, Larcher comes across as the bastard offspring of Lemmy and Billy Gibbons, and suits this style of music perfectly.

It’s actually not as ‘Metal’ as I expected it to be, and is all the better for it. Sure, there’s plenty of riotous rock like ‘Black Car Driving Man’, ‘Demolition Inc.’, ‘Gasoline’, ‘Licence To Play Loud’ and ‘Lipsynch Stars,’ but there are other avenues explored that prevent the album from becoming too similar in structure. For example, ‘Rifle Down’ is a heads-down boogie number highly reminiscent of Status Quo’s ‘Rain’, ‘At Least I’m Drunk’ is old-school blues rock, ‘Riptide’ has a highly catchy guitar melody running through it (though rather questionable subject matter!) and ‘Zombietrain’ has an atmospheric arrangement. Nazareth vocalist Dan McCafferty guests on the harmonica–laden blues of ‘Whiskey Wonderland’, and Oimel is reunited with Fast Eddie Clarke on ‘Wasted In Berlin’ – probably the closest Motorhead sounding track on offer, and Eddie truly lives up to his name with an absolutely searing solo.

It definitely will not appeal to the ‘pink and fluffy’ brigade, but if you’re searching for a dose of dirty, sweaty, grimy rock’n’roll then this will be right up your street. And if Lemmy & Co. decide to call it a day any time soon, then Nitrogods are primed and ready to step into their boots.
