Can't find anything to get enthusiastic about.

It must be hard sometimes for bands when they are struggling to achieve even a modicum of exposure without the backing of a major record label. Constant touring and a never ending club circuit must prove disheartening for even the most passionate musical die-hards. I’ve heard it said many times in the past about paying dues before success comes calling and it is a well worn adage that many of today’s biggest artists like to use when reflecting on their roots. At the end of the day one likes to think it is the quality of the material and performances that dictates whether a band stands or falls.

Exit State feature front-man Roy Bright, brother of former Premiership footballer Mark Bright, and ‘Black Veins’ is their second full length album following on from ‘Death Of A Rockstar’, which was released in May 2010. Unfortunately even after a number of spins I can’t find anything to get enthusiastic about. The whole package has an amateur feel to it and the comparison that comes to mind most often is of a well-traveled pub band. The biography mentions Metallica, QOTSA and Nickelback but I can’t relate to any of those references.

Too many of the songs lack quality in both structure and execution and I have to say that Bright is not one of the better singers I have heard. It doesn’t help that his weak vocals have a tendency to get lost in the muddy mix and these shortcomings are highlighted even more during reflective moments such as ‘Ten Years Later’. The opening one/two of ‘Enough Already’ and ‘In That Place’ have energy for sure but they are rushed and almost punkish in their delivery. ‘Wasted’ and the title track have a swagger about them and a certain amount of musical promise but they come towards the end of the CD and by then it is just a little too late. ‘All For You’ and ‘This Life’ close the album but both are hindered by some poor vocals once more and even the threat of death will not prompt me to hit the repeat button again.

Exit State have toured with Marseilles and were also booked for Hard Rock Hell in 2011 so maybe opportunities such as these will prove influential in developing the band’s career.
