Assuming that you’re not on the lookout for music that will challenge you cerebrally, then this, the debut album from Aussies Dead Star Renegade may just find a place in your heart. Harnessing a classic rock sound to the more modern traits of today clearly has its advantages; the songs on ‘Blackwing’ have a familiar feel but retain a vibrancy that keeps things fresh.
The incessant ‘Tommy Gun’ rumbles along at a fervent pace with some sizable riffs and a healthy dose of melody, whilst ‘Time Standing’ is a melodic power ballad of some note. Held together by a neat independent production, songs such as the glam tinged ‘Born to Lose’, the admirably simple yet hooky ‘Supersonic’ or the modern grunge lite ‘The Serpent’ demonstrates a keen sense of dynamics and tunesmithery that is sadly lacking from many independent releases by bands of this ilk.
