Alestorm – Moho, Manchester (UK) - 9th February 2012

“Would you like to come and watch Dream Theater?” said Mr A. “No thank you” I said “I’d rather go to a gig where I can wear an eye patch, hand out fake doubloons, carry a large inflatable parrot and STILL not look out of place”! So off I went to see ‘true Scottish Pirate Metal’ in its finest form – Alestorm! I hadn’t realised, but pirate metal has existed as a sub-genre since 1976 with bands like Running Wild first coining the term. With support from Periphery, Darkest Era and Claim The Throne, everyone was geared up for the Alestorm set and there had already been much hilarity in the form of people in horse masks joining Darkest Era on stage to celebrate a band member’s birthday. I’m not an aficionado of this sort of metal at all, but all of the supports seemed to be happy, jolly metal, which went down very well with the sold out crowd.

By the time Alestorm took to the stage on this, the ‘Useless Drunken Bastard’ tour, the assembled masses were well tuned in. Now, perhaps they’re not the most technical band in the world, but what they lack in musicianship, they certainly make up for in enthusiasm. They rattled through the set with classics such as ‘Shipwrecked’, ‘Wenches and Mead’, ‘Over the Seas’ and ‘Captain Morgan’s Revenge’, all the while being carried along by the piratical rantings of vocalist/keytar player Chris Bowes who has almost made talking like a pirate an art form! It made me giggle when he had the audience giving their opinions on which was better - Pirate Metal or Viking Metal, almost starting a Harry Hill style ‘FIIIIGGHHT!’ in the process. By the time it came to the encore and the much anticipated (by me, anyway) ‘Keelhauled’, I was quite worn out from dancing, but it was a night to remember and I hope it won’t be too long until the next one. With a somewhat deflated parrot and no doubloons left, I, along with my fellow pirate metallers, went home happy.
