Theory Of A Deadman - HMV Institute, Birmingham (UK) - 27th February 2012

After a British arena tour with label mates Black Stone Cherry and Alter Bridge, Canadian rockers TOAD return to Blighty hoping to win over new fans as well as satisfying those who seemingly can’t get enough of the band.

Fronted by the dry humored cartoon like Tyler Connolly-who else could organize an audience sing-along where half the audience gets the chance to win a turkey by singing better than the other half-and backed by the shy rhythm guitarist Dave Brenner, the not so shy bassist Dean Back and drummer Joey Dandeneau; the latter providing sterling background vocals to aid the disturbingly creaky voice of Connolly. Having once and for all shaken off the accusations that they are little more than a poor man’s Nickelback with the enjoyable if misogynistic rockabilly tinged hard rock of latest album ‘The Truth Is’, the band feel more at ease with themselves.

The newer material seems ready made for the live environment and Connolly definitely sounds more comfortable on opener ‘Gentlemen’, the rip roaring trailer trash anthem ‘Lowlife’ or ‘Bitch Came Back’ than he does with the more structured melodic material from ‘Scars and Souvenirs’ such as ‘Not Meant To Be’ or ‘All Or Nothing where the high notes really are a problem. Old favourites include ‘Santa Monica’ and ‘Say Goodbye’ from the underrated ‘Gasoline’ album and ‘Nothing Could Come Between Us’ from the debut…was that really ten years ago?

With the now staple encore of ‘I Hate My Life’, which really should have been a massive hit for them, the near sell-out crowd went home happy. Judging by the number of people here compared to how many the band would have pulled in a few years ago the band’s star is rising. In general more people appear to be interested in going out to watch rock bands that write their own songs and play their own instruments. Tyler would be proud that it’s his band that is perhaps unwittingly leading a rebellion against the deluge of reality TV artists and talentless dross that passes itself off as music. At least that’s the theory!
