A broiling, emotionally charged monster of an album.

Whilst linguistically speaking the title might perhaps be a tad unwieldy, I really can’t fault the sentiment ... yes, having spent much of the last couple of years busying himself with Masterplan, the Nordic god of voice once again resumes his ongoing solo journey.

When he first appeared in the mid 90’s fronting Ronni Le Tekro’s much misunderstood Vagabond project, Jorn Lande was quite rightly lauded as one of the brightest vocal finds of his generation. Since then he has gone on to establish an impeccable set of credentials amongst a growing army of fans drawn to his mesmerising mix of David Coverdale and the late, great Ronnie James Dio.

His seventh original studio solo set to date (and his first such release since the excellent ‘Spirit Black’ back in 2009), the much anticipated ‘Bring Heavy Rock To The Land’ once again sees our hero indulge his passion for bands like Rainbow, Dio, Sabbath and Whitesnake. Produced (just like last time) by the always impressive Tommy Hansen at his Jailhouse Studio complex in central Denmark; whilst the album isn’t stylistically that different from the sound Jorn first established with ‘Out To Every Nation’ back in 2004, sonically speaking it’s just awesome. Add to that perhaps the strongest mix of songs yet to appear on any Jorn album, the fact that guitarists Tore Moren and the returning Jimmy Iversen are literally on fire throughout, and that Jorn himself seems to be 150% emotionally invested in each and every soulful performance and well ... it’s no surprise that the end results are nothing short of spectacular!

Kicking off with the moody lament ‘My Road’, the albums really sparks into life with firebrand second track ‘Bring Heavy Rock To The Land’, a majestic, brooding epic of a track that very few (only Jorn and Axel Rudi Pell spring to mind) can carry off with any real conviction. Elsewhere there’s a couple of interesting covers thrown into the mix – the Christopher Cross penned ‘Ride Like The Wind’ (this version has all the power and majesty the Saxon one lacked), and interestingly a totally different take on Masterplan’s ‘Time To Be King’ – but it’s the sheer breadth of moods and emotions displayed on the likes of ‘Chains Around You’, ‘A Thousand Cuts’ and ‘Ride To The Guns’ that surprised me the most.

In recent years some have criticised Jorn for the lack of variety in tempo on his solo releases, and whilst personally speaking I have no problem with that, I can perhaps see their point, This time however that issue has been addressed remarkably succinctly, and as I said earlier, with some of his strongest, most emotive songs yet – compare and contrast the aforementioned ‘Ride To The Guns’ and ‘Black Morning’ for example, the former a raging riff fest, the latter a slow burning power ballad full of soul.

A broiling, emotionally charged monster of an album!
