German folk/medieval rock featuring guest appearance from Doro.

What we have here is a German based folk / medieval metal band. This is new territory for me so I thought I’d take a look at their website to get some background, but as this is a German band, so naturally the website is also in German. No problem, I’ll do a Google translate - but as anybody who has tried doing this will know, you get a literal translation of the words so it all ends up rather confusing. And it’s also quite amusing reading it and trying to make sense of it all. However, I digress; I did find out that these guys have been around since 2000, and this is their 8th release. The title translates as ‘He Who Sows The Wind’.

Musically, these guys are obviously very adept at what they do. Punchy guitars share equal measure with bagpipes, accordions, bouzoukis, flutes, and hurdy-gurdys, and there’s plenty of melody amongst the light and shade of the Celtic atmospherics. The lyrics are naturally delivered in German, which I find does not make for comfortable listening, but that’s just a personal opinion.
One notable inclusion is the appearance of Doro on the anthemic ‘Salome’, with Ms. Pesch also singing in her native tongue. It’s probably the most commercial track on the album.

To somebody who’s not really into this type of music it can come across as a little cheesy. Admittedly during the lively track 3, ‘La Jument De Michao’ when the flutes and bagpipes take over from the guitars, I did have a mental flashback of Spinal Tap, and those 2 dwarves dancing round the miniature Stonehenge monument. Also having names like Brother Frank, Falk Irmenfried of Hasenmummelstein, and Lasterbalk the Blasphemer doesn’t help either. And to be honest the accordion does grate on the eardrums after a while (note: don’t listen to this on an iPod!) But if Folk Metal floats your longboat, then you can probably do a lot worse than this.
