New album from the Nottingham four piece.

Feeling ‘trashy?’ Then New Generation Superstars’ ‘Raising the Stakes,’ should more than satisfy your craving. For the more discerning listener, approach with caution…

NGS are an amalgam of the Wildhearts, Guns N’ Roses and other sleaze artists too numerous to mention. Hailing from Nottingham, the four piece have spent the last five years honing their craft, first coming to prominence in 2007 with their eponymous release, ‘Crash Course In Rock n’ Roll.’ The band has also caused a stir on the live circuit, recently completing a UK tour alongside Love/Hate and the Almighty’s Ricky Warwick. And it’s this ‘live’ feel that’s prevalent across new release ‘Raising the Stakes.’

Opener ‘I Won’t Stop’ clearly states its intentions and from there on in there’s pretty much no let up as NGS tear through 12 low down n’ dirty tracks. However, whilst there’s no doubting their conviction, the quality of material on offer is a little more variable - up and down like a whore’s knickers. The first four tracks almost have you spontaneously throwing a wobbler, but ‘Sub Class’ and ‘Set You Free’ just don’t seem to kick it. Just when you thought things had taken a turn for the worse, ‘Beat Em Down’ delivers a sucker punch, with its driving rhythms and fist in the air chorus.

‘Rocker’ is forgettable and it’s to be hoped Slash isn’t listening to ‘Ain’t No Time,’ with its intro practically lifted from Appetites’ ‘You’re Crazy.’ Track 11 ‘Star’ is another dip in form, but NGS do it again and, appropriately enough, raise the stakes for closing track ‘Save Me,’ easily the best track on offer.

If NGS can shake themselves down and offer a little more consistency in the songwriting department, then there’s no reason why they can’t be real contenders.
