Title

What this band has done on its debut album makes me think they are going to be big.

Dead City Ruins originally from London but now based in Melbourne, Australia has released its debut album ´Midnight Killer´ four years after their debut EP ´Lost In London´. What the band has been doing wisely during this time is to tour and play and as a result the album has a certain maturity to it. In terms of pedigree, the sound is on the raucous side of melodic, more Guns n´ Roses than Bon Jovi and so on. However, their sound is unique with a very powerful feel including crashing drums and pounding bass. The singer, Jake has a distinctive vocal style, half sung, half snarled and maybe adding to the image I notice that the band does not do surnames. Hence, the roll call is Jake on vocals, Mick on bass, Drewsy on drums and Blanchy on rhythm guitar – all very G n´ R!

The music speaks for itself though; the opening salvo of ´Where You Gonna Run´ and ´Damn My Eyes´ has the band setting out its store. This is a live band, handing out an invitation to its mosh pit with no prisoners taken. Any band needs depth though, and Dead City Ruins demonstrate that with the very classy ´My Lai Massacre´ with a squeaky rasping and purring classic guitar riff. The song has a great structure with the aforementioned riff and a classic rock breakdown with extended soloing over a rumbling bass. As hard rock goes, this song ticks most of any boxes you would care to mention. The band has clearly taken care with how their songs are presented down to the retro-70´s live closing of the song with the purposely played final bum note.

The title track is a bit faster and has another great hypnotic riff again with a powerful drum beat – this is the band´s trademark sound and they are wise not to let any track deviate too far. Having said that, ´Blues´ (in effect metal blues) gives a glimmer of the band´s potential to open up new territory. ´Go To War´ and ´Highway Girl´ keep the pace going and on the latter it´s always good to hear a cowbell. ´Fallen´, the final track, is however the standout song on the album with dual layered guitar tracks, a great vocal half in an echo box style but then opening up into a more stratospheric chorus. It’s a very memorable way to close an album.

The songs on ´Midnight Killer´ are so strong that you think you´ve heard them before. I count that as a very good sound and this is an album I would put in my “play multiple times” category. Don´t get me wrong though, this is a raw band, there are superior musicians and singers elsewhere but hearing what this band has done on its debut album makes me think they are going to be big.
