An interesting album from new band on the scene.

Whoever writes some of the information sheets and band bios that accompany promotional CDs should be shot, the one for Ninth Circle stateing that the power metal trio’s music conjures up thoughts of Maiden, Stratovarius and Primal Fear - No it most certainly does not! In fact calling them a “power metal trio” is pushing it a bit; yes, they have a metal side to their music but I found as I played the album there’s much more hard rock approach to the music from Ninth Circle and the band’s clever use of keyboards, harmony vocals and melody brought to my mind one that likes the melodic rock of the 80’s far more than the metal that their bio claims they do.

The band comprises vocalist/guitarist Dennis Brown, bassist Frank Forray and drummer Dave Davis and they have actually put out a good, solid (if retro) album of rocking tracks that fans of hair metal with a slightly harder edge might enjoy.

‘Frontman’ is the lead off track and it tells the tale of a soldier and his life away from home fighting a war, ‘The Power Of One’ reminded me of a more melodic Armored Saint, with a big guitar riff and a strong vocal; this song will be a live favourite I’m sure. ‘The Journey’ has some wonderful harmony guitar parts that are complimented by the keyboards and the solo from Dennis Brown is superb. ‘Our Last Days’ has a Motley/Ratt like vibe that is powered along by some excellent twin guitar riffs, whilst ‘How Many Times’ comes across like a classic Great White-a-like song, featuring a strong hookline and another big riff from Mr. Brown. ‘Fire Falling’ is Ninth Circle’s all out guitar fest for the album, lots of solos a catchy chorus all making this track a winner. ‘Obsession’ and ‘Hour 21’ continue the band’s trend in great songs though the real tour de force on the album is ‘If It Bleeds’, a heavier song structure with a mean and moody rhythm guitar driving the track along, until it hits the solo (which is superb) then back once again to mean and moody. Now after all these very good songs we hit a little snag - ‘The Trooper’ (yes that one), which Ninth Circle play with much love and affection but I’m afraid they fall short of the mark (there are some bands/songs you just can’t cover). That said they try hard to pull it off, drafting Outland’s Jeff Prentice in on guitar to help, and they do almost succeed. Ending with the wonderful ballad ‘Prisoner Of The World’ shows that Ninth Circle have a more mellow side to their music and the song itself is full of real passion and emotion.

So all in all, this is an interesting album from new band on the scene. I reckon that given half a chance, they could really go places. Time will tell…
