Pathfinder have really come of age with this album.

The first Pathfinder album ‘Beyond Space And Time’ found this Polish band worshipping at the alter of all things Rhapsody (of Fire). They poured everything including the kitchen sink into their music and for me it worked on many levels and garnered them umpteen awards for metal newcomers of the year - which they richly deserved.

The band’s second release ‘Fifth Element’ finds them tightening things up and adding different elements to their music, including full filmic orchestration and arrangements, choirs, guest vocalists and more importantly nailing their own identity onto each of the songs. They also continue the ‘Dreamworld’ story started on the debut album, with the band telling of however one struggles in the real world you end up needing to find something more. This elusive component is the ‘Fifth Element’…

So as you would expect with a story line like that the music has to be hard hitting and full of complexity, over the top musicianship and to put it bluntly at times it must be plain bloody daft as well. Pathfinder achieve all those things with ease and make this album a lot of fun to listen to. ‘Fifth Element’ comprises eleven songs plus one bonus cut and it is really one long musical suite cut up into smaller pieces…So after the obligatory instrumental intro, the album sets off with the explosive title track ‘Fifth Element’ where fast and furious metal verses are interspersed with sombre cello passages, vocal choirs and everything else Pathfinder can throw into the mix. This might sound like a lot to take on board (which it is) but stay with it and by the end of the sixty plus minutes of the album you’ll have a massive grin on your face. Other tracks to mention are the 100mph ‘Ready To Die Between The Stars’ a song dedicated to the Glory of Heavy Metal, where guitarists Karol Mania and Gunsen try to outdo the Dragonforce boys at their own game (and maybe succeed). ‘March Of The Darkest Horizon’ is all shades of black and white, slow to mid-paced one minute blisteringly fast the next: a really clever song indeed. The ballad ‘Yin Yang’ features Agata Lejba-Migdaiska (Electric Chair) on vocals and this is one of the standout songs of the album, beautifully arranged and sung - the duet with Pathfinder singer Simon Kostro is simply wonderful. So too is ‘Elemental Power’ where once again the band mix fast riffing guitars with operatic vocals, death grunts (only a few) and anything else they could find in the studio at the time.

Recorded produced and written as more of a soundtrack rather than a rock album, Pathfinder have really come of age with this album. I for one cannot wait to hear more from this engaging, entertaining and very interesting band.
