A classy great song-filled metal album.

Nightmare have an impressive thirty years of history behind them and on the strength of this new album many more years are sure to follow. Those long years include recording a plethora of albums that started out at first in the heavy metal vein then changing after a ten year hiatus to a sound not unlike that of a symphonic power metal juggernaut. And on ‘The Burden Of God’ Nightmare have really upped their game making this CD one of the best albums of its type that I have heard in 2012. Firstly I must tell you about the production which is superb, bringing out the best sound in all the instruments and making the vocals of singer Jo Amore sound powerful yet full of subtlety, the production is worthy of admiration in its own right, breathing impressive life into the songs on this album.

And what a set of songs! I could wax lyrically about each and every one but I resist the temptation and will emphasise just a few instead. ‘The Burden Of God’ is heavy (naturally) but it is also tempered with an innate sense of melody and the Dio-esque vocals of Jo Amore drive the song on to its fiery ending. ‘Crimson Empire’ has a very melodic riff that teeters on the edge of hard rock, with a great chorus and some inspired bass playing from Yves Campion. This track shows a different side to Nightmare, yet the music fits in so well with the other songs here that it never feels out of place. ‘Shattered Hearts’ is the big album epic, with Mr Amore putting in his most expressive, emotional vocal, the song building tier upon tier until its almost violent finish. ‘Final Outcome’ has an energetic riff that is soon joined together with some clever backing vocals that take the track into uncharted territory. Again this is one of the more melodic songs from the band and they really make it work. And in the end we come to ‘Afterlife’ which sees Nightmare guitarists Franck Milleliri and Matt Asselberghs trying to out solo one another whilst the rest of the band try to keep up; it’s an outstanding song.

It seems strange to me that despite some thirty years in the music business, for whatever reason Nightmare remain a relatively obscure band in the power metal world, although with ‘The Burden Of God’ this should be about to change. As classy great song-filled metal albums go, this is one of the best you’re going to hear this (or for that matter) any other, year.
