Heavy, dramatic, clever and cutting in equal measure.

Canadian (dark prog?) metallers Protest The Hero, only recently came to my attention because whilst channel surfing late at night (no, not for those channels - honest Guv) I came across a station called Propeller TV that was broadcasting a show called Metal Tune. The video playing at the time I switched on was from this band’s new album and it was called ‘Hair Trigger’ and to put it mildly this song blew me away. The band showed it has the musical chops of Dream Theater and Zero Hour mixed with the aggression and attitude of Coheed & Cambria and Mastodon. So on the promise of this one song, I knew had to find out more about this band and with the very helpful people at Spinefarm UK I secured myself a copy of their brand new (second) release ‘Scurrilous’.

Thankfully ‘Hair Trigger’ isn’t the only song of such high quality that the band possesses. Far from it in fact because the five men who make up PTH, have recorded a set of heavy, aggressive and powerful metal songs that have some of the most satirical, biting and socially aware lyrics I’ve heard in many years. Topics run the gamut from sex-tapes and cancer to fleeting fame, broken love affairs and more besides And each topic and theme is looked at with microscopic detail and then, complex and at times destructive, hateful or deprecating lyrics courtesy of singer Rody Walker and guitarist Arif Miradolbaghi are used in an extraordinary way to tell the songs’ stories.

I’ll mention a few of my own faves to try to give you and idea of what PTH are all about; ‘Hair Trigger’ which started it all for me, is a dark tale of destructive love affairs, with caustic lyrics such as “Redhead’s got her hooks in my back , points her finger and shows me what I lack”, or “Remember that she hates you, and though she might elate you, she tries to kill the great that’s in you now”. Simply brilliant, and when these words are backed by musicianship of the first order, you can see how special PTH are. Then we have ‘Tandem’ a song about a young girl with cancer, with thought provoking lyrics like, “Cancer takes a bite of every family, and it eats some families whole” show just how intelligent in their lyricism this band is. Others to look out for are the satirical ‘Sex Tapes’ and how people use them these days to make themselves famous, or the funny and hard hitting ‘Tongue Splitter’ about the psychobabble spouted by Psychiatrists to their patients.

Heavy, dramatic, clever and cutting in equal measure ‘Scurrilous’ isn’t for the faint hearted but given the time, many of you who like the darker, heavier and clever side of metal will find this album to be an amazing aural experience. One of the best new bands that I’ve encountered in ages.
