Pure class from start to finish.

Five time Grammy award winning bluesman Robert Cray is back, with his first studio album since 2009's 'This Time'. Aside from him being a legend in his own right, the other factor that caught my attention about this release was the fact that the much in-demand producer Kevin Shirley has been brought in to take the helm.

Shirley has made quite a name for himself, helping to breathe life into recordings from the likes of Black Country Communion, Europe, Mr. Big, Journey and another skilled bluesman, Joe Bonamassa. With Robert Cray, Shirley has done what he does best - capture an artist doing what they excel at, without too much fuss. The second the opening bars of '(Won't Be) Coming Home' have kicked in, the indications of what to expect are clear. The drums sound phenomenally crisp and clear, the bass rich and Robert's sublime guitar playing cutting through with his smooth voice sitting beautifully in the middle.

'Worry' takes a step more towards Santana territory with its vibe and stakes its claim as an early standout. 'I'll Always Remember You' features a gutsy brass section to supplement the guitar riff before the upbeat 'Side Dish' sets feet tapping. 'A Memo' is a more mellow offering that would not be out of place in the hands of Huey Lewis And The News circa their 'Plan B' album. 'Blues Get Off My Shoulder' utilises the timeless twelve bar formula, giving Robert the most scope to stretch out on the guitar and show what a world class player he is. 'Fix This' has a terrific groove with some gorgeous organ work behind the guitars, before the first class blues track 'I’m Done Crying' with its mournful organ playing, heartfelt vocal and guitar work sets out its stall as a another high point.

'Great Big Old House' and 'Sadder Days' are both prime slices of mature, soulful blues - it's rare I mention every track in a review, but there really isn't any filler here. Every track is expertly crafted and played, and Kevin Shirley's production work is perfect. There's not really anything here that will surprise or shock those who have heard his previous work, but suffice to say, Robert Cray sings like a bird and plays like few others can. Pure class from start to finish.
