Reissue of the band's debut album.

Back in Fireworks #53 I reviewed the excellent second offering Unholy Rites from Fatal Force, the band led by guitarist Torben Enevoldsen (Fate/Acacia Avenue/Section A). It is an album that blends the strongest aspects of 80s styled melodic metal and current European power metal to great effect, so much so that Torben has decided to reissue the long out of print debut effort from the band in digital format through the usual i outlet.

With the self-titled debut released some six years before Unholy Rites you wouldnt be too surprised if they sounded related, but quite different and that is exactly how Fatal Force comes across compared with its younger sibling. That fact becomes even more understandable when you find out that the only common bond between the two albums is Torben himself, as while he was joined by vocalist Michael Vescera (Yngwie Malmsteen) and drummer Dennis Hansen for album number two, it was At Vance and Yngwie frontman Mats Leven who fronted the bands 2006 debut, with drum-master Daniel Flores adding his unmistakable mark behind the kit. On that strength alone, you wont be shocked to know that the performances are flawless, but neither will you be disappointed by the songs themselves.

Other than the musicians involved, two other points of difference standout between Fatal Force and the album that followed it, the first being that the sound is more melodic-metal than power driven, with the slower numbers coming on in a very convincing Whitesnake manner, while the more intense tracks lean on slightly less bombastic themes. The second difference being that Torbens guitar playing on Fatal Force is even more in your face and dextrous than on Unholy Rites. Just listen to the way he melts the frets on Out Of Fuel, which sounds oddly reminiscent of En Vogues Back To Reality during its chorus (!), or the positively shredding Insanity for evidence that this is a six-string-master working on full throttle. However thankfully the riffs and melodies are even stronger than the solos and with Leven and Flores howling and hammering their respective magic onto the songs, neither is this a one-man ego trip. Rather it is the sound of three musicians working at the top of their game.

Also included on this reissue is the previously Japanese only track Nothing Is Forever, which serves to make an already cracking album even better. Fatal Force is a band worth your attention and this debut was and still is an extremely impressive starting point!
