The best musicians always have numerous strings to their guitars.

First meeting when the multi-talented Robin George was recording his ‘Notorious’ album in the studio next door to where Fuzzbox and their singer Vix were working, the ‘You’ album has been over two decades in the making. Best known as an AOR and hard rock guitarist, Robin has over the years worked with a hugely impressive list of AOR, rock and prog heavyweights; however in recent times the blues have been capturing his imagination, something that, even given that some of this album was laid down in 1990 with the rest coming together 2008, shines through strongly here.

Two songs on the album are re-workings of Fuzzbox numbers, ‘You’ and ‘Your Loss, My Gain’ while ‘World’ and ‘LovePower And Peace’ were also aired in different forms on the wonderful all-star charity album ‘LovePower and Peace’ which Robin recently put out (well worth purchasing and still available through http://www.robingeorge.co.uk/sharing.htm). Here the songs are more stripped back, with the vocals of Robin and Vix starring alongside poised, fluid guitar work that elevates what could have been standard melodic rock and blues fare, into captivating, vibrant offerings.

It is pleasantly unusual to hear a confident female voice battering out the gritty blues rock of ‘Guilty’, with Vix really powering her way through the lyrics in a classy, sassy manner, while Robin adds his more reserved (on these songs anyway) tones to offer up an alternate focal point. The Spanish guitar of ‘Seduction Song’ again proves the sultry seductressness of Vix’s voice, although the song does feel a little out of place plonked in the middle of what is in essence a blues rock album with an eye for melody. More comfortable in these surrounds is the punchy funk of ‘Shall I Lie’ and the AOR anthem of ‘Rock And A Hard Place’, the latter of which quite stunningly combines a smooth sing along chorus with a stomping beat and gloriously upfront guitars - it would be fair to suggest that a whole album’s worth of material like this would have your average Fireworks reader frothing in their Cresta!

The final two bonus songs on the album, the almost Neil Young like guitar attack of ‘Bluesong’ and the more refined ‘Cry Wolf’, enhance the rest of the songs perfectly, with the intimate live recordings bringing an air of authenticity that music of this ilk thrives upon, while underlining just how well matched the vocal styles of Robin and Vix really are.

Not necessarily the album you would have anticipated from a vocalist who has had genuine chart hits, or a guitarist known for working with the likes of Glenn Hughes and Robert Plant. However ‘You’ works tremendously well, proving that the best musicians always have numerous strings to their guitars!
