A thumping good metal record played with energy and aggression from a talented group of musicians.

Reverence is a new heavy metal group founded by Bryan Holland, (guitarist - Tokyo Blade, Arrest) and Todd Michael Hall, (vocalist – Jack Starr’s Burning Star). In 2010 they got together to write and record their own brand of metal paying homage to their influences such as Priest and Savatage. On drums Bryan recruited Steve Wacholz who in turn bought on board Pete Rossi, (guitar). The final piece was put in place by Hall who added fellow Burning Star bassist Ned Meloni. They now unveil their debut ‘When Darkness Calls’.

The title track kicks things off; a gloomy riff cranks out and builds into a massive progression that picks up a gear before stepping hard on the accelerator for a furious chorus. Another all out metal number is ‘The Price You Pay’ with its stellar riff that is slower paced and crunchier. As each chord cranks out it is very hard not to rock your head. The other tracks offer subtle variations on this traditional metal approach. There are a couple of retro influenced offerings like ‘Devil In Disguise’, ‘Revolution Rising’ and ‘Vengeance Is Mine’ which are inspired by 80’s American metal. All three have driven chunky riffs and screaming guitars teamed with a harmonic chorus. The likes of ‘Bleed For Me’ and ‘Gatekeeper’ tip their hat towards a power metal vibe. ‘Bleed’ has some maniacal vocals before an exceedingly catchy chorus whilst ‘Gatekeeper’ has more of a chant about it as the guitar chugs away like a roaring motorbike. But all these are surpassed by the best song; another outright metal track called ‘Monster’. An unexpected bass solo precedes a colossal cascading progression which swirls and spins like a savage twister tearing its way across the land. The two guitars play in tandem creating a true maelstrom of sound that Hall’s vocals simply ride along on. The impressive solo feels like being caught right in the middle of the storm as the sound revolves around you.

This is a wonderfully enjoyable metal record that should hold appeal for many listeners. The band has managed to mould some traits of different ages and styles of metal into a coherent and rollickingly fine album. To give a comparison think Pink Cream 69 whipped up with some Freedom Call and a healthy scoop of early Metallica. Hall is an expressive vocalist with a range that works well; he can wail and scream but also add some depth when required. The riffs and progression concocted by Holland and Rossi are the focal point and they certainly fire up some thunderous tunes. The production gives the album a nice polished finish whilst still keeping a bit of freshness to remain faithful to its influences.

This is one for all straight up metal lovers but especially those with a passion for that classic metal sound. There’s also plenty for those who sink their teeth into other genres interested. A thumping good metal record played with energy and aggression from a talented group of musicians.
