A strong release that sounds fresh and vibrant whilst paying homage to the band's rich legacy.

It's now thirty long years since the Tygers' fourth album 'The Cage' hit the UK charts on the back of their version of The Clovers' 'Love Potion # 9', but despite a myriad of line-up changes and long periods of inactivity, founding guitarist Robb Weir has had guitarist Dean Robertson and drummer Craig Ellis beside him since he reformed the band back in 2000, with Italian vocalist Jacopo Mielle joining in 2004 and bassist Gav Gray being added last year. Since their reformation things have been on an upward trajectory, at least musically. Apart from the false start that was 'Mystical', they got back on track with 2004's 'Noises From The Cathouse' and improved no end with the excellent 'Animal Instinct' back in 2008. For 'Ambush' the band have brought back veteran producer Chris Tsangarides - the man responsible for their 'Wildcat' and 'Spellbound' classics - and even had the eye-catching cover painted by Rodney Matthews, the celebrated artist for the likes of Magnum and Diamond Head who painted the Tygers' 'Crazy Nights' cover back in 1981.

The band and Tsangarides have done a great job of recreating the classic Tygers sound whilst at the same time avoiding sounding dated, playing to their strengths with eleven melodic hard rockers based around catchy riffs, good choruses and strong vocals from the underrated Mielle. The spirit of the NWOBHM flows through satisfyingly meaty fare like the strident opener 'Keeping Me Alive', the early Tygers feel of 'One Of A Kind' and the rapid fire riffs of 'Play To Win', whilst 'Mr. Indispensible', 'Rock & Roll Dream' and 'Speed' keep up the pace without letting the side down. There's a cool bass line and a shuffle beat to 'Hey Suzie' (a sequel to 'Suzie Smiled' perhaps?) and 'These Eyes' is maybe just too close to Dokken, right down to the George Lynch-esque solo, but the Spanish guitar part on the superb 'She' is wonderful and the highly melodic 'Burning Desire' may well be the best of a good bunch.

Robb Weir and the guys have put out a strong release that sounds fresh and vibrant whilst paying homage to the band's rich legacy, and that's really all anyone should want from a Tygers Of Pan Tang album in 2012. It won't change the world but it may just change your opinion of Tygers Of Pan Tang.
