A good listen for anyone who likes thoughtful pop-rock.

After a gap of nearly a decade, the English new wave band return with a strong, mature studio album. In the 80s The Fixx had a string of hits in the States with the likes of ‘Saved By Zero’ and ‘One Thing Leads To Another’ as well as hit albums.

New wave and Melodic Rock aren’t always obvious bed fellows but The Fixx just about manage to bridge the divide. Keyboards play an integral part in the band but they sound like a band working together as a cohesive unit rather than a stale electronic creation which can often happen with new wave music. There’s also some guitar from Jamie West-Oram which tips the record into the rock camp. What defines The Fixx’s music is Cy Curnin’s voice and lyrics. Vocally, Curnin does have that new wave tremor in his voice but it has more depth and character than many of his new wave peers.

His lyrics tackle the usual subjects of relationships but with the maturity of a man in middle-age who has experienced the good and bad that life can bring, instead of the usual student teen lust that constitutes the subject of so much rock music. ‘Take A Risk’, ‘Second Time Around’ and ‘Shaman’ all paint a vivid picture and convey the emotion behind the lyrics well. As well as the brooding over relationships there are songs about broader issues like the strong ‘What God?’ where Curnin wrestles with the question of faith and religion.

A mood is created by a combination of the music and Curnin’s vocals that slowly reels you in. ‘Anyone Else’ and ‘Just Before Dawn’ were mastered by Mark Needham who has previously worked with The Killers and as a result, these songs sound current. It makes you realise that The Killers are probably consciously or unconsciously a fan of the kind of music The Fixx make. While not sonically like Steely Dan, they share that same art cool chic and mature pop-rock sensibility that means the band can age better than some of their 80s preening and pouting peers.

If you liked them then, then you’ll like them now, or even love them. This is a good listen for anyone who likes thoughtful pop-rock.
