A particularly attractive remaster.

Originally debuting in 1982, Fastway was another ‘supergroup’ of sorts – this one featuring erstwhile Motorhead guitarist ‘Fast’ Eddie Clarke and perennial UFO casualty Pete Way. Way’s departure from UFO was hardly surprising really given the issues he had at the time (and still has to this day); Clarke’s exodus from Motorhead on the other hand sent shockwaves through the rock world at the time as I recall … apparently hooking up with ol’ gaffa tape nipples and The Plasmatics was one step too far!

On discovering themselves without regular day jobs, Clarke and Way fell into a casual working relationship that initially had disaster written through it in large Day-Glo letters, although the guitarist at least would pull things round and see it through to fruition. Securing the services of former Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley, and an unknown Irish singer Dave King, Fastway eventually got off the ground. A deal was struck with CBS, and for a while everything in the garden looked rosy. Wasn’t too long however before Pete did a disappearing act (thanks it’s alleged to Sharon Osbourne pulling strings in the background), and four became three.

Undaunted, Fastway eventually entered the studio to record their own particularly unique brand of gutsy hard rock, a disingenuously potent brew with half an eye on the classic hard rock acts of the past, whilst at the same time sticking one hand straight up the skirt of any passing maiden who ventured too close. When it was eventually released in April 1983, despite sounding nothing like Motorhead (or even UFO for that matter), ‘Fastway’ was actually a strong album if gutsy rock ‘n’ roll happened to be your thing.

King was a revelation … behind that red mane of curly hair his at times Robert Plant like vocals lent the whole project an air of statesman like respectability; and finally free of the straightjacketed Motorhead formula, Clarke at long last began to prove he was far more than just Lemmy’s sidekick. Between them Clarke and King fashioned a sinewy, hard hitting, yet persuasive brand of gutsy rock n’ roll perfectly encapsulated in songs such as ‘Easy Livin’’, ‘Say What You Will’, ‘Heft!’ and ‘We Become One’.

This particularly attractive remaster includes seven additional bonus tracks – a couple of single B-sides plus the original CD album bonus track ‘Far Far From Home’, as well as four tracks from the April 1983 Friday Rock Show sessions – not to mention Howard Johnson’s retelling of its journey from infancy to conclusion. Worth it for King’s vocal alone in my opinion … what a talent!
