A pinnacle of songwriting and performance unmatched by any other melodic rock solo artist.

Of all the long-standing AOR stars of the 70s and 80s, Rick Springfield must surely be one of the most consistent, delivering vibrant, upbeat albums (Christmas and covers records excepted!) that no man in his sixties has a right to do so well. His first new album since 2008's 'Venus In Overdrive' sees him nailing the same exuberant pop-rock style as that release and its 2004 predecessor 'Shock / Denial / Anger / Acceptance', trimming the songs of all unnecessary fat and leaving short, sharp bursts of melody that usually clock in at around the three minute mark. Featuring his live band of bassist Matt Bissonette, drummer Rodger Carter and guitarist George Bernhardt, Rick has enlisted some special guests to add a little more interest to an already mouth-watering proposition.

All of the usual Springfield strengths are here in droves, none more contagious than the chorus of the opening track ‘Wide Awake’; an immediate modern pop-rock classic with a tight, punchy sound, a slightly processed vocal on the verse and a soaring chorus that will rattle around your head for weeks. Similarly the simple hooks of the upbeat ‘I Hate Myself’ and ‘Love Screws Me Up’ are direct and to the point, with a modern twist on 80s cheese, whilst the more laid back ‘You And Me’ , the acoustic-based ‘Gabriel’ and the quirky ‘Joshua’ are all pop-infused ditties with crossover potential, clever lyrics and not too much sugar.

There are a few instant classics too in the catchy as hell ‘A Sign Of Life’, the darkly atmospheric ‘I Found You’ and the slightly manic rocker ‘Depravity’ - which isn’t as uncomfortable as the title suggest and whose guitar solo (the only one on the album!) may well be by long-time RS collaborator, the great Tim Pierce. ‘My Last Heartbeat’ is another killer tune with plenty of production quirks that hark back to his ‘Tao’/’Rock Of Life’ period and also features Mr Mister’s Richard Page on backing vocals, whilst Page also appears alongside John Waite on the quite brilliant ‘Our Ship’s Sinking’, which is everything that’s great about Rick rolled into three breathless minutes.

The production is sharp and Springfield’s vocals are timeless - I’m certain he sounds even better than he did over forty years ago - and although there are a selection of at least three bonus songs with various different versions and online downloads, I’m afraid I was sent just a basic eleven tracks even though the standard album has twelve. It matters not, the songs I have keep Springfield at a pinnacle of songwriting and performance unmatched by any other melodic rock solo artist. Oh, and another bonus point for rhyming “innuendo” with “in your window”.

Holy hell, Rick Springfield has done it again. An exemplary release literally chock full of perfectly crafted melodic rock. Long gone are the days of power pop purity and music aimed for the younger crowd. Here, Rick has come up with an absolute stunner of an album, loaded with soaring vocals, guitar hooks galore, bridges that give way to choruses that reach the heavens, carrying the listener with it never giving a damn how the listener is going to find his way back. As good as 'Venus In Overdrive' was, 'Songs For The End Of The World' is even better.

While listening to this 10/10 album I could hear the raucous sounds of Bai Bang, the melodies of The Poodles, and the modern flair of Airbourne or Kill The Alarm. Turn the volume to 10 and get your blood pumping to the amazing opener 'Wide Awake,' the lyrics of 'I Hate Myself' hold nothing back, the guitars and drums of 'You And Me', are amazing and the hard rocking 'My Final Heartbeat', the totally modern sounding 'Joshua', and 'Gabriel' will all have you listening to this CD time and again.

Hate to admit it, but as I have grown older I kind of put Rick Springfield on a back burner. Between his 1983 'Living In Oz' to his 1999 release 'Karma', I didn't pay much attention. His 2005 'The Day After Yesterday' featuring all covers of 1970's and early 1980's soft rock was pretty good, but it was 'Venus In Overdrive' that brought me back and 'Songs For....' will keep me a fan eagerly awaiting for his next release.
