Fabulous stuff!

Despite ‘Hollow’s Gathering’ being the third instalment in Brazilian drummer Heleno Vale’s Soulspell metal opera project, this is my first exposure to it and WOW am I impressed! This is power metal of truly epic proportions that possesses such an expansive cast of guest vocalists and musicians that it rivals even the most ambitious of Arjen Lucassen’s Aryeon concept albums. The list is too long to mention everyone but suffice to say that Vale has expertly harnessed each musician’s individual talents with such breathtaking effect so that it really does feel like he is telling the Soulspell story much in the same way as you would experience a stage musical or opera.

The album starts off in magnificent fashion with the title track, a frenetic bona fide neo-classical epic with vocalists, too numerous to mention, dropping in and out, which is followed by the slow burning but no less enjoyable ‘A Rescue Into The Storm’ that builds to a dramatic symphonic conclusion. Trillium’s Amanda Somerville then takes up the vocal reins on the melodic, bass driven metal number ‘To Crawl Or To Fly’ and the haunting power ballad ‘Anymore’. ‘Adrian’s Call’ and ‘Change The Tide’ are all out power metal numbers where Somerville – whose display of unbridled power and passion is faultless throughout – is joined by various male voices, who regrettably I can’t identify to you as I wasn’t supplied with a list of who appears where. The two fall guys of classic British metal lead the charge through the next two songs. By that I mean the unmistakable tones of Blaze Bayley and Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens. They are both in fine form as they err.. rip through ‘The Keeper’s Game’ and ‘The Dead Tree’ - whose guitar and keyboard jousting puts me in mind of Dio era Rainbow at their grandiose best - and for once Owens is a bit more restrained in his delivery, which really benefits the mood of the song. It’s left to Somerville and yet another vocalist I can’t identify to bring things to a conclusion with the beautiful piano led ballad ‘Whispers Inside You’

Superbly produced by fellow Brazilian Edu ‘Tito’ Falaschi, this is a faultless power metal tour-de-force. The Soulspell concept was initially conceived as a trilogy but there is now talk of Vale continuing the saga into future releases. This is a sound move as, on this showing there are no signs of his creativity waning in any way whatsoever. Fabulous stuff!
