A bombastic piece of rock n roll just waiting to assault your ears.
I have often mourned the loss of cover artwork but do accept in these cash strapped times that photoshop style computerised images are cost effective. But do we really need a cover with pregnant women in lingerie with animals heads stuck on their shoulders no matter how cheap it costs?
Needless to say I was not expecting much when I cautiously pressed play; luckily New York’s Sex Slaves have produced a bombastic piece of rock n roll just waiting to assault your ears. W.T.F.R.U (you work out what it means!) comes crashing out the speakers in a frantic punk rage before the more groove orientated ‘Lose The Dress’ shows the band have a great many musical ideas. If you’re a fan of Bonfire then ‘Burning Bridges’ will whet your taste buds though the somewhat juvenile lyrics are a required taste, shall we say! There is little romance in any of the lyrics and for some they may be a little offensive, still with song titles like ‘I Wanna Kill You’ or ‘Sik Fuk’ you know where you stand with these guys.
I especially like the sleezy but dark grind of ‘Call Of The Wild’ a song right out of the Monster Magnet school of song writing with a terrific guitar riff. What keeps a lot of this album spinning on your deck is the diversity of material, and the infectious ‘Get In Line’ is a good example: part new wave rock and part Backyard Babies in its sound. Taking some ideas from Green Day but minus the humour ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Band’ plods along quite harmlessly but is not really too memorable to be honest and is little more than filler. What you see is what you get with songs like ‘Lets Make Out’ or ‘I Got Drunk’ - not exactly songs for your first date at home maybe!
Unlike the Dead Kennedy’s or The Ramones it is hard to work out if is this satire or just plain sexist nonsense; either way its damn good fun.
