Fireworks Magazine Online 55 - Interview with Fools For Rowan

FOOLS FOR ROWAN

Fools For Rowan are a pop infused rock band from Nashville TN.  The original line up for the band was formed by vocalist Erin Mullins in 2009.  Soon after, their debut album ‘Twisted.  Tied Up.  Tangled.’ was released and the band embarked on touring across the USA.  There were some changes to the band including on bass in 2011 but they now have an established line up.  Fools For Rowan have recently released a 6 track EP including the single ‘Killed A Man Today’.  Dave Scott got chance to ask vocalist Erin Mullins some questions to find out more about the band.

You have quite a memorable and intriguing name.  Can you tell our readers how you arrived at it and if there is any story or meaning behind it?

When I decided to move away and pursue a career in music my mom, (Robyn), and grandpa, (Darwin), were the 2 people who always encouraged me to go for it and helped me believe I could do it.  When it came time to find a name for the band it just seemed right that it be named after them!  So I took Robyn and Darwin and created Rowan leading to Fools for Rowan!

Can you introduce the different members and how they came to be part of the band?

I’m Erin Mullins- (Lead Singer) - I’m the co-founder.
Rachel Brandness- (Lead Guitar) - We held auditions in Nashville for a lead guitar player and she came to audition, the rest is history.
Ryan Nanney- (Rhythm guitar, bgv’s) - Ryan came highly recommended to us from a good friend.
Jordan Cullen- (Drummer) – A friend of a friend suggested him to us.
Andrew Williams (Bass) - He used to be in a band with our drummer Jordan, so when we were looking for a bass player Jordan called him up and he came to Nashville to audition and joined us.

For those in the UK who have yet to hear of Fools For Rowan, what would be the best description of your sound and overall style?

We like to say our style is Rock Pop.  It’s definitely closer to rock but with a pop influence.  Honestly, we usually say that our music sounds like Erin, Rachel, Ryan, Gibb, and Jordan… we sound like Fools for Rowan!

Who would you say are your inspirations and influences?

We all have such varying influences.  We really like Paramore, Three Days Grace, Skillet, and Heart… and so many others.

You have just released a six track EP called ‘Who Killed Amanda Day’.  Is there any significance behind the name?

The name is a play off of the title of our single ‘Killed A Man Today’.  At one of our shows I realized that it sounded like I was singing “Amanda Day” instead of “A Man Today” ha-ha.  So we just decided to run with that.

Can you give us an insight into the EP and what potential listeners can expect?

Our goal with this EP was to make it as close to live show energy as possible.  We have worked hard to make sure that our live show packs a serious punch and that it’s as high energy from start to finish as possible.  So in the studio, energy was our main focus.  When you listen to our EP in the car we hope it gets you amped like a live concert would.

You have filmed and released a video for the single ‘Killed A Man Today’.  It’s a very infectious track, which is obviously part of why you choose it, were there any other reasons?

When we first started playing that song live we noticed how much extra fire and energy it gave us.  That just translated to the crowd so well that we knew it had to be our next single.  We all really look forward to playing that song every night.

The EP seems like it’s gathered a bit of attention with your music due to appear on MTV and Fox sports shows in the USA?  Do you know how your songs will be used?

We don’t know exactly how they’ll be used yet, but we are so excited and honoured that our songs have been chosen.  It’s really cool and a big deal for us!

Fireworks - The Ultimate Magazine for Melodic Rock Music

Your focus is on the EP right now, but do you have any plans in the pipeline for a full second album?

Not yet… we’re just taking things as they come and making sure that we just keep doing right by our fans.

Who is responsible for most of the writing? When composing which comes first, the music or the lyrics?

I co-write all of our songs with various other co-writers.  Shaye Smith and Ken Harrell are co-writers and producers on most of the tracks on the new EP.  On the song ‘Refuge’, each of the band members had a hand in writing that one which makes it extra special.  As far as what comes first, that all depends.  Sometimes you have a great lyrical idea and sometimes you have a medley that you can’t get out of your head, so the answer is both.

Where do you get your inspiration from when writing lyrics?  Some of them seem very emotional and deep, do you write from personal experience or is it more of a general take of the world?

Inspiration comes from everywhere… movies, another song, a conversation, a feeling.  I get inspiration from anything and everything.

You do a lot of touring in the US, do you enjoy life on the road and are there any thoughts to touring the UK?

Life on the road is pretty cool for the most part because we all get along so well.  I’ve heard of touring bands that hate each other or are fighting all the time, I don’t know how they do it.  That would be miserable.  We’re all close and all friends so that makes it easier.  We would love to visit UK!  We don’t have any plans to do that right now, but hopefully in the future. That would certainly be amazing.

What has been the biggest highlight/most important moment so far for the band and on the other end of the scale, what has been the hardest point?

The highlight would be getting to share the stage with Evanescence in Nashville!  We all grew up listening to them so to get to share the stage in our hometown was really amazing.  It was kind of a full circle moment for us.  The hardest point comes when we have been out on the road for a while and are missing our families like crazy.  Family has always come first for FFR so we make it a priority not to stay away from home too long.

What do the band members like to do in their free time away from the music industry?

We all do different things.  Gibb is a big video gamer, Rachel is climbing the belt system in Krav Maga, Ryan likes to produce and mix music as well as make jambalaya, Jordan likes to help coach his son’s soccer team and fix things, and Erin is a fitness instructor/coach and likes to spend time watching movies with her 2 dogs and husband.

Have you anything to add or say to the Fireworks UK readers?
