Worth getting hold of.

I had never previously heard of Overhead when I received this, but I was reliably informed that this was their fourth album, and their first for four years. They are a Finnish band and the blurb about the album looked promising, saying that it was inspired by the perpetual darkness of the Finnish winter and the never ending sunlight of their summers.

So I put this on expecting to be non-plussed, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. Opening track, ‘Lost Inside,’ impressed me straight away as an in your face, balls to the wall rock song, followed by ‘Berlin,’ which also had good riffage and a memorable chorus. Things were looking promising, and that’s the difference between a good album and a mediocre one; being able to remember what you have heard after you stop listening. And that applies to most of this collection which chops and changes, dipping its toes into jazz and psychedelia with ‘Syriana,’ jazz/blues with ‘Grotte’ and blues crossed with the Scorpions in ‘Last Broadcast.’ Varied it is, but strangely having mentioned blues twice there, it doesn’t come over as a blues package.

As with most albums, there is always at least one ‘throwaway’ track, and that is the case with ‘An Afternoon Of Sun And Moon,’ which is a cross between The Specials/Undertones and The Pet Shop Boys, sounding too different from the rest and it shouldn’t really be on here at all. I think maybe a little bit of trying to please everybody crept in, or they just ran out of good ideas. Opposite to that ‘Alive’ is my personal favourite, up-tempo, interesting sounds, (including the dive-bombing flute), and a melody that just sticks in your head. Also, the flute, which is played by vocalist Alex Keskitalo, features on a couple of other tracks on here, automatically putting Jethro Tull into my head.

So, worth getting hold of, and will be interesting to see what they do in the future.
