Title

Uninspiring.

Blurred Lines is a compilation of tracks from Bennett’s previous releases ‘The Velvet Hush’ and ‘Gone Missing’ released after signing with the Australian Blue Pie Records. Sorry Johnny, I’ve tried, I really have. I first got hold of this album over a month ago and after a first couple of plays it did nothing for me, just couldn’t get into it. So put it back, a few weeks later let’s give it another go. It’s now shortly before deadline date for reviews and I’m still floundering.

Bennett set’s himself up as an All American singer songwriter in the Kravitz / Springsteen mould. Unfortunately he has none of the class or talent to pull it off. An uninspiring, one dimensional voice, could be described as a rasping bluesy vocal. But there’s a distinct lack of passion and soul in there to give it any sort of memorable quality. Album opener, the bizarrely titled ‘Sister Pharmaceutical’ brings to mind similarities to an old Midnight Oil outtake, in terms of vocal pitch and a bit of angst in the playing, and with more crash cymbals per minutes than I can recall in any other song I’ve heard. Even allowing for the lack of vocal quality, the song writing does nothing to help with a series of bland offerings without a decent hook in sight. Only ‘The Violent Hush’ shows any sort of sophistication – think Richie Sambora’s solo albums.

Trouble is, there are plenty of other bands such as We Are Augustines operating in a similar market and showing all the passion, lyrical content, and subtlety that is missing here. Even as a compilation album it’s twelve tracks still only weigh in at thirty eight minutes so not even scoring high on the value for money stakes. Both albums in full could probably have fitted on one Two for One CD, although I may have found that too much to bear.

I did give the album every chance Johnny, honestly I did, but the word I keep coming back to is uninspiring.
