This debut album is fast-paced and relentless.

Hailing from Paris, these self-admitted “hairy rockers” have placed themselves on the map of rising European bands with explosive live performances, including Hellfest 2012. Their debut album is fast-paced and relentless, driving home riff after classic riff in the style of Airbourne and AC/DC. Alex Kourelis’ gruff vocals compliment the lighter sound, especially in the opener ‘This Is Rock’n Roll’. ‘Rock’n Roll Nation’ is a great sing-along anthem as is ‘Bang Your Head’, complete with anthem-like backing vocals. The production here is really great; there’s a grittiness that needs to be captured that they’ve got but the layers of vocals and guitars still sounds tight and crisp.

Ok, so it gets a little boring as you hit the middle of the album; the riffs are simple and haven’t changed much and the melodies are hard to distinguish from one another. The songs all follow a similar formula of a toned-down introduction before the distortion and cymbals kick in. There were also times when Kourelis sounded a little flat, or perhaps his low key just didn’t fit the song. ‘Girls In The City’ is one of the stronger tracks, the bass pumping in the undercurrent, although again it’s all a little simple; the songs are competent but don’t stem much further than that. The solo on ‘Girls In The City’ is a little better, looser and more explorative, but, like most of the solos on the album it’s short lived.

‘The World Don’t Go Around’ benefits from a slower, smoother pace though if you think you’re getting a minute’s respite with a ballad then you’d be wrong. ‘Night Rocker’ has a similar tonal distinction, this time in the chorus; Tom Bullot on the drums bashes out a thumping rhythm for you to bang your head to. Closing track ‘The Way To Rock’n Roll’ echoes the beginning of the album and I liked this continuity. It’s a solid, enjoyable and competent album; it just lacks that extra spark and creativity that makes you jump up to play it all again.

They’re not lying; this is rock’n’roll but the repetitiveness makes me wonder how long this will be the way to do it.
