Melodic heavy rock with powerful riffs, great musicianship and above all else great songs.

A British band that knows how to play melodic heavy rock with powerful riffs, great musicianship and above all else great songs, isn’t something that you find dropping through your letter box everyday, I can tell you. So when reviews editor Paul Jerome Smith asked if I’d like to review this debut album from Derbyshire based rock outfit Fahran, I jumped at the chance. Now all that said, on first, second, third and maybe fourth play through of this album, I was shall we say a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of guitars that Fahran utilise. They hit like a solid wall of bricks and then keep on hitting until they leave you feeling raw (but satisfied). Yet underneath all this power and force, is a band that also know the value of having at the heart of the song, something that all good music should have, which is melody. Fahran have infused the twelve songs that appear on this eponymous album, with enough strong melodies for you to drown in, which lifts their songs onto a whole different level.

So after the short intro ‘Ascension’ the band rip into the blistering ‘Silver Scene’ a tale of a young girl who wants to be a famous movie star but fails; the song comes across with tons of attitude and an almost Lillian Axe like riff. ‘Cynics & Dreamers’ starts with sleazy guitar at its core, the vocals of Nick Whitcroft compliment the dirty sound that guitarists Jake Graham and Chris Byrne wring from their instruments and the track is a full blooded hard hitting rocker. ‘Ashes’ is another riff based track that has a wonderful slow building melodic refrain running through it, Nick Whitcroft’s vocals are again the focal point for the song but the rest of the band almost steal his thunder. ‘Crude Design’ again conjures up Lillian Axe as a reference point but Fahran then stamp their presence all over the song with great authority and I especially love the solo on this track. ‘Serenade’ is a slower song than what has come before, but for all that it could still be the most compelling track that Fahran have in their arsenal. The passion and emotion the band pour into this one cut, makes you marvel at the maturity of their song writing. Finally we have ‘Bittersweet History’ with its big hook line and superb musicianship, which again tells me that Fahran are a band that have all they need to make it in the world of melodic hard rock today.

I have been privileged to hear quite a few great debut albums this year and Fahran’s self titled CD has got to be in my opinion up amongst the best of them.

They are a British band that definitely deserve your attention (check the band out at www.fahran.com)
