Dirty Lips make you shake your hips.

Great name for a sleazy rock band, so that works well. This German band released an album in 1993 and then nothing until now. Which means, of course, that the whole eBay community is desperate to have it, paying up to $999 for it, apparently. That must be eBay in Narnia.

But they don't half try hard. Straining every sinew, making veins stand out on their foreheads, eyes popping out of their crimson heads. 'Tis to their credit and to some avail. They actually produce something powerful, groovy and a bit sexy. If you can reach it over the desperation to rock and an inclination to do it just like loads of others. They hit the spot early on with opener ‘Nobody Like You’, a music box smashed by a filthy riff which all stops for a whistle, announcing Frank's whiskey-soused tonsils; the groove is important here and has the power to deliver it all night.

‘Whenever’ even mixes sourmash Southern styles with Sweet sherbet, leading us to a terrace chant with a rabble lounging against the back wall as Frank coughs his lungs up and an echoplex is discovered in the corner of the room. ‘Shoot Me’ revels in its simplicity, just as AC/DC do, but add a slide guitar you'd swear was nicked from the Quireboys dressing room and a lazy vibe which can barely be bothered to deliver a solo, but sorts itself out for a brazen chorus.

Unfortunately, there is a soggy middle to the album, ‘That's Why’ is unmade, slow and torpid, with a simple beat and an acoustic working with a sparse piano, trying to be an organic ballad but just appearing messy. And the risible ‘Girls’ tells the hilarious story of a man getting it on with a woman and finding she has a penis; yes, it's a laugh a minute transgender joke, not homophobic at all; no issues about their sexuality here...

But when they aren't showing their offensive fears, they roll, they rock, they groove and they try to surprise us. Hope it's not nearly twenty years until the next delivery. Dirty Lips make you shake your hips.
