If only all compilations were put together with such a keen eye for detail.

Seems rather strange to be holding the second Royal Hunt compilation in less than six months in my sticky little mitts, but I have to say that this rather special package from Frontiers knocks the ‘Heart Of The City’ set from earlier in the year into a cocked hat!

I don’t really want to get too bogged down in the record company politics of it all – although I rather suspect that an old record company sold the rights to some of the earlier stuff without the band’s consent or knowledge (hence the rather ‘fortuitous’ timing of the earlier release) – but given the choice between a ten track single CD and this, a 3 CD / DVD package … well, it’s a bit of a no brainer really when you think about it.

Containing a mouth-watering selection of songs from their entire eleven album career, adding a brand new song – the brooding ‘Save Me’ – plus newly recorded acoustic re-workings of three more – ‘One By One’, ‘Bodyguard’ and ‘Restless’ – and then topping it all off with a DVD containing all the promotional videos they’ve ever made, I don’t really see how they could go wrong to be honest.

Throughout their 20 year history the band line-up has been shall we say somewhat fluid (not least in the vocal department), but to his credit ringmaster extraordinaire Andre Andersen has stuck firmly to the path that he so obviously believes the band should take. As such, when you compare older tracks like ‘Clown In The Mirror’ or ‘Message To God’ with newer numbers like ‘Paper Blood’ or ‘Half Past Loneliness’, the quality is frighteningly consistent throughout (which at the very least affirms his talents as a songwriter). Of course, different people will have their own favourite periods of the band, or even prefer one singer to another – most seem to concur that the DC Cooper fronted version is the best – but to these ears there’s something special about every era of the band, and it’s great to see all of them well represented here and presented on an equal footing.

Got to hand it to Frontiers, they’ve set the bar that little bit higher with this particular release – now if only all compilations were put together with such a keen eye for detail!
