Galgano's solo debut is an undisputed triumph.

Those of you who cannot place John Galgano are referred back to my review of ‘Crush Of Night’ by Izz. John (and his brother Tom) are founder members of that band and rather than finding time to explore their back catalogue as I had intended, I have instead been sent this present release - Galgano’s first solo effort – to sink my ears into!

At around 44 minutes, its eight tracks (plus a delightful, short, hidden bonus), is about the right length to make a tremendous impression, while not over-staying its welcome. Even then, one of the tracks (‘1000’) is a multi-part epic clocking in at around 19 minutes, and the six parts of this are worth the price of admission to the album alone while final section ‘Is This Heaven? It’s Iowa’ is the album’s spine tingling piece de resistance.

There’s a lot of variety on offer otherwise, from the acoustic opener ‘Real Life Is Meeting Part 1’ to the really quirky and off-kilter ‘The Only Thing’ through to the amazing harmonies of ‘Bigger On The Inside’. Indeed, Galgano credits keyboardist and producer Shawn Bishop for convincing him “to give seven part harmonies a fair shake”… Throughout the album there are many surprises as song structures veer away from the expected, incorporate sounds (listen for the single “meow”) and ideas that eschew the obvious and take the listener on a wonderfully entertaining and breathtaking journey. To achieve this, Galgano has gathered a posse of talented performers to support him including IZZ colleague Laura Meade who provides lead vocals on several of the songs, and supporting harmonies on many others.

The record sounds million dollars, but will have cost a mere fraction of that amount. Galgano’s solo debut is an undisputed triumph and should be sought out not only by progressive music addicts but also those like myself whose musical boundaries are expansive and unfettered by preconceived expectations.

I have found repeated listens to ‘Real Life Is Meeting’ to be a guilty pleasure. So might you…
