This is one Asylum (Pyre) to which you shouldn’t be afraid to commit.

Rising out of my favourite genre comes another new name to me. Asylum Pyre is a French melodic metal band originally founded in 2003 by guitarist Johann Cadot and bassist Julien Punch. Their debut ‘Natural Instinct’ was released in 2009 with vocalist Carole Alcantara. She has since been replaced by Chaos Heidi for the recently released follow up ‘Fifty Years Later’.

This album comprises ten tracks lasting about fifty minutes. All of them have their own merits but there were a couple that sank in quicker than others. ‘The Frozen Will’ has some intense double drumming, oscillating keys and a nice crunchy riff. There are some string effects as well to add depth in the catchy chorus and a quick intense solo. The most complex track is ‘Any Hypothesis’ with its many layers and several time and style changes. There’s a doom like feel to some of it and a gallop to other sections. Midway through everything comes to a sudden halt and there is nothing but acoustic guitar, violins and Heidi’s silky vocals before things fire up again. Ballad wise ‘Fisherman’s Day’ is a beautiful sea shanty and a duet between Heidi and Cadot. It’s a simple track with a repeating progression where the vocalists are the main focus. The other ballad is the title track ‘Fifty Years Later’ which opens with effects-filled beats and clean guitar notes until the chorus arrives in bombastic fashion. Like peaks and valleys in a mountain range the song rises and falls in power but the passion is constant. This was just edged out by ‘These Trees’ as my personal favourite. A massive guitar centred intro leads to a chord driven riff for the verse. Both guitars rumble and fizzle away as Heidi’s strong vocals bounce along on top. The chorus is seriously infectious and the delicious way the vocals are delivered helped it stomp into my head from that first listen.

In my opinion this is an excellent and quality release. The definition of them being melodic metal is pretty apt although Asylum Pyre does incorporate elements of symphonic, gothic and even progressive metal into their sound. The real standout member is Heidi who has a very versatile ability that ranges from an aggressive approach to more operatically styled vocals. Cadot has composed some interesting progressions and solos whilst Herve Schiltz and Tony Decaillon are responsible for some excellent musicianship on the rhythm guitar and keys. On the production and technical front the album is first rate with a polished finish that adds to the listening experience. In all, this is wonderful, sometimes atmospheric album that is well worth your attention and it has a certain accessibility that makes it a suitable introduction to those not familiar with the genre.

This is one Asylum (Pyre) to which you shouldn’t be afraid to commit!
