An excellent modern melodic metal album.

I don’t know what’s in the water up there in Sweden but 2013 sees them continue to lead the way in producing high quality European rock/metal with this, the debut album from Lavett. They turn out to be an experienced bunch, having spent the last ten years touring and recording with a variety of Swedish metal bands such as Lost Horizon, Crystal Eyes and Cemetary (to name but a few) but would seem to have really err...“found their purpose” by coming together in this new modern metal band. They’ve taken the blueprint from bassist Henric Carlsson’s former band Dead By April and fellow Swedes Sonic Syndicate – it’s no surprise then that they’ve already toured with both – and ramped up the melody a couple of notches.

What we have then are huge hard rock hooks and melodies set against a backdrop of some glorious synth textures but there’s a lurking undercurrent of crunching metal riffs and harsh vocals – providing a skilful counterpoint the choruses and melodies – that bring some of that patented Gothenburg sound to the party. The end result is something rather special with songs that rattle along at such an exuberant pace, the album is over before you know it and perhaps more importantly, leaves you gasping for more. What really makes ‘Find Your Purpose’ stand out from the crowd are the massive gang vocal choruses that stick in your head almost immediately. These are used to maximum effect on the magnificently anthemic ‘Can’t You Hear Me’, ‘Everybody’, ‘Take A Step Back’ and ‘It’s Not Over’. ‘Hold On’, power ballad in the same vein as Sonic Syndicate’s ‘My Escape’, aptly demonstrates that they’re not a one-trick pony before ‘Blame The Silence’ turns up the heat again with some furious riffs, where drummer Chris Silver proceeds to give his entire kit a good bashing on a complex circular drum pattern, but not at the expense of that omnipresent hum-able melody.

It’s ‘Forgotten Generation’ and ‘Blessing For Life’ though that hint at the massive mainstream crossover appeal of this record, where they tone down the extremities just a little and produce some infectious riffs and grooves to produce two absolutely killer rock tracks. A slick, modern production, with just the right amount of punch in the bottom end to get your fillings rattling, is the icing on this very delicious cake.

I can’t help but think that the material on this album was the direction that Nuclear Blast were pushing Sonic Syndicate towards when they imploded and splintered a couple of years ago after making ‘We Rule The Night’: So if you liked that album you’ll love this. But, most of all, this is an excellent modern melodic metal album that I’m sure most readers of this magazine will enjoy. First essential purchase of 2013? Hell Yeah!!
