If you like keyboard and synth driven music, there's plenty to enjoy here.

DBA won’t necessarily mean anything to you at first glance, it certainly didn’t to me, until I discovered it stood for Downes Braide Association. Featuring Geoff Downes from Asia and Yes, he is partnered with multi-instrumentalist and Ivor Novello winner Chris Braide, who has written for a bunch of contemporary artists such as David Guetta and Christina Aguilera. On paper, it could sound like any number of things.

There was nothing for it but to dive in, and I have to say I was most pleased with the opening ‘Sunday News Suite’. Opening the album with a 13 minute track sounds brave, but it’s actually four individual songs with their own identity which make up the single suite. ‘Sunday News’ is a bright, breezy pop rocker with a terrific chorus driven by Braide’s excellent voice, which is pleasant, clear and on the upper register reminiscent of the likes of Peter Cetera. ‘Islands’ is mellower, awash with keyboards from Downes. ‘Goodbye Johnny’ peps things up again with an eighties style drum beat and some glorious atmospheric synths before the more contemporary sounding ‘Anywhere’.

Setting out your stall like that with the first actual track on the CD takes some balls, but the guys nailed it – so much so that it wasn’t until I saw the track listing in my iTunes that I realised it was all one single piece. The rest of the album meshes perfectly, from the dramatic ‘The Radiant Children’, the eighties pop of ‘The Superfortress’, the almost Coldplay feel of ‘Songs That Can Heal’ the modern pop of ‘Road To Ruin’ or the sparse and stunning piano ballad ‘Sky Sailer’ which closes the album.

The album is very much more on the pop side of the spectrum, there’s no guitar riffs or squealing solos here, but what the album does have is some superb musicianship, excellent production and great singing. It’s also one of those records that improves the more you hear it. If you like keyboard and synth driven music, there’s plenty to enjoy here.
