Vision have released another enjoyable album.

One for the melodic metal fans amongst the Fireworks & Rocktopia readerships, Vision’s ‘Hope & Fear’ is the Chicago based metallers follow-up to 2009’s ‘The Other Side Of Grey’. Taking their blueprint from albums such as ‘Operation: Mindcrime’ and some of the more commercial Savatage releases, at the forefront of Vision’s sound are the dramatic, powerful and occasionally even sinister vocals of Nefarious. Aside from the singular named vocalist the band is completed by Sean P. Gahgan on both guitars and keyboards, bass guitarist Azrael and Alex Kai on drums. Gahgan is certainly fully employed as both guitars and keyboards vie for the prominent role across arrangements that are pretty much equally divided between soothingly melodic and crushingly bombastic in their execution.

Various spoken word, effects and mumbled dialogue gives way to the theatrical opening of ‘Spero Timor’ before the first song proper ‘Wailing Death’ that gallops along at pace led by the double bass kick aggression provided by Kai and Nefarious making an immediate impact with his bellowing screams and wails. Some huge riffs and shredding solos are Gahgan’s trademark and he blazes away with much enthusiasm across the furious ‘The Edge’, ‘Edge Of The World Rising’ and the title track. During the mid-album breakdown of tender ballads ‘Autumn’ and ‘Winters Fall’, Vision showcase their more subtle side and the vocalist proves to be equally as capable of hitting all of the right notes and leaving a very favourable impression with such a diverse register. The writing, recording and inspiration for each of the songs is detailed in the booklet and whilst there is no overriding concept the themes are largely centred around struggle, loss and redemption.

There is a lot to like about Vision and they would certainly go down well on the mainland European festival circuit should they be based on the other side of the Atlantic. As it is they have released another enjoyable album in ‘Hope & Fear’ that deserves to see them both discovered and enjoyed by a wider audience.
