A delightful album, perfect for those contemplative moments.

The performer here is Wisconsin, USA-based multi-instrumentalist Cailyn Lloyd, and this is her fourth release (one is jointly credited with vocalist Dani Daly). It’s a fusion of progressive rock and classical music and her first completely instrumental offering.

Cailyn comes across as an extremely accomplished performer, and here she plays guitars, bass, keyboards, synthesisers and drums. The latter do sound a little “clunky” at times, but overall the dexterity and skills demonstrated across the four pieces mark her out as a precious talent, and someone of whom we should be aware for the future. The ‘Four Pieces’ here comprise interpretations of three classical pieces: ‘Fantasia’… On A Theme By Thomas Tallis (Vaughn Williams), ‘Largo’, the second movement of Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony’ and ‘Adagio’ by Samuel Barber along with ‘Nocturne’ an original composition inspired by the piano music of Schubert and Chopin. Instrumentally, keyboards are very much to the fore on the first of these, guitars on the rest.

The intense multi-tracked instrumentation on ‘Fantasia’ remains quite faithful to the original score and is fabulously symphonic. It is also the longest track, and possibly the most emotive as it weaves its way through the various well-known themes. ‘Largo’ comes as a surprise by comparison, as the guitar arrangement gives it quite a bluesy, even soulful and definitely rockier feel with some impressive soloing. The original ‘Adagio For Strings’ by Samuel Barber is unfamiliar to me, but what we encounter here is a piece featuring extremely effective meshing of hard rock and symphonic elements: initially quite ponderous but building to a guitar-infused crescendo ahead of a brief, more colourful closing section. If ‘Nocturne’ is indicative of her compositional talents, then I yearn to hear much more of Cailyn’s original work. This is a deeply magical piece: stylistically a mix between Mark Knofler’s more introspective moments and Eric Johnson on his ‘Venus Isle’ opus.

‘Four Pieces’ is a delightful album, perfect for those contemplative moments and also late evening relaxation, and certainly worthy of your investigation if my comments resonate with you…
