There is a quality and emotion to Axel’s playing that raises it above the competition.

Instrumental guitar albums are always a difficult one to review. Almost by definition they are self indulgent, designed to show off the skills and talent of one guy. And in the rock and metal field, do we need another Satriani or Vai?

If you put Axel Boman into Google, chances are you’ll find a Swedish House music DJ of the same name. But keep looking that bit further because ‘Wake Up’ is probably the best instrumental album you are likely to hear this year. So how do you make an album that can maintain a consistent sound to define you as a performer yet be diverse enough to keep a listener’s interest without heading off on such a tangent that you just lose your audience?

Opening track ‘Teenage Idol’ is probably what you would be expecting. Solid bass and drum lines from Igor Lallai and Piwee Desfray, a relatively simple rhythm guitar, with Axel showing his lead skills with a mixture of sustain, shredding and even a fair bit of feel over the next four minutes: a typically Satriani like opener. But thankfully we don’t just get more of the same. ‘Irish Coast’ is a slower, laid back solo with the Celtic feel that the title would suggest, building to a crescendo before bagpipes – yes bagpipes – take on the main rhythm for the last 30 seconds or so. ‘Rock On’ is again in the typical guitar hero style before ‘Fire Boogie’ lifts the pace with some blues based R’n’B riffing. Axel’s equivalent of Satriani’s ‘Satch Boogie’ maybe, but the blues of Pat Travers is more of the influence. ‘Close To Me’ slows it down again with some acoustic rhythm thrown in and a haunting slow blues sole reminiscent of Gary Moore at his best.

And so it goes on with a rich and eclectic mix of styles and influence. Axel hasn’t got the almost traditional trait of totally meaningless song titles yet, ‘Funky Boy’, ‘Irish Coast’, ‘Fire Boogie’ all give you what you’d expect from the name. There are also a couple of jazz based workouts in ‘Zazz’ and ‘One Day, We’ll Live Together Again’. But throughout it all Axel’s playing is immaculate, from the smooth sustain to the frantic shredding. Highlight for me is saved until the last track, with ’Celtic Tears’ offering a truly emotional finale to the album.

Yes, the influences are all there, Satriani, Beck, Gilbert, Moore, Travers – you’ll even find Boman playing a cover of Satriani’s ‘Surfin’ With The Alien’ on his website. But this is no copycat, soulless mimicking of those styles. While it may not be particularly unique or original there is a quality and emotion to Axel’s playing that raises it above the competition.

Does the world need another Satriani? No, probably not. Do we need an Axel Boman? Yes, I rather think we do.
