Excellent work.

It’s been five years since the debut album from Civilization One; several line-up changes later, we now have a second album in ‘Calling The Gods’ This is typically European melodic power metal created by a mix of French and German musicians; fronted and originally formed by Sri Lankan vocalist Chity Somapala, who is probably best known for his work with Firewind and Avalon, along with several other European based metal projects. Only Chity and bassist Pierre-Emannuel Pelisson survive from the original project, now with two guitarists rather than guitar and keyboards. The overall sound is stronger, but without losing all of the melodic side of Chity’s song writing.

Opening track ‘Aazis’ is a short intro before the band launch into title track ‘Calling The Gods’. The twin guitars work effectively with a catchy riff, driven by some powerhouse drumming from Michael Stein, whose work is spot on throughout the album. Plenty of harmonies before a shredding lead break emphasising the metal side of the band. ‘Land Of Flames’ is more straight forward almost classic rock: the Teutonic influences coming to the fore with a track reminiscent of the Scorpions, particularly the chorus and even vocally. ‘Archangel’ is the highlight of the album and has the band back in their own groove again. It’s an up tempo rocker with soaring vocals over some genuinely melodic riffing, although despite being the built around the twin guitars, the background keyboards do provide the depth that the song deserves. ‘Evil Eye’ slows things down again with a much heavier feel and growling backing vocals in contrast to Chity’s strong voice. ‘Hell Awaiting’ kicks off in speed metal style before we get to ‘Reunite’ which is the token acoustic ballad, which although pleasant enough is really nothing more than that. Watch out for the two bonus tracks of ‘Believing The Dream’ and ‘Dreams Of Fire’ which were written as anthems for the Sri Lankan cricket team and national Olympic team and have nothing at all in common with the rest of the album. They may add a few sales in Sri Lanka but have no true place on this album, watch out and avoid.

So there is plenty to recommend on this album, you do get exactly what it says on the tin – European, melodic power metal. The performances are excellent throughout and Somapala can count this as another positive in his ever lengthening list of albums and contributions. With a strong band supporting him, if he can get this line-up on the road or around the European festival circuit they will undoubtedly go down a storm. I guess the only real down side is that despite the lengthening and impressive resume with the likes of Firewind, Power Quest, Faro and others, there’s nothing that has or will really blow this up to a worldwide level. It’s excellent work, albeit in a relatively limited market. Nevertheless, certainly one to enjoy.
