A band who could be the next big name in progressive metal.

Speaking To Stones is the brainchild of US guitarist Tony Vinci, who decided after the self titled STS debut was released in 2006, that he wanted to go in a more melodic/progressive direction with his music and song writing. So first he began by restructuring the band, bringing in Andy Engberg (Section A/Lion’s Share) on vocals and Mark Zonder (Fates Warning) on drums, then adding Anthony Brown (Graphite Symphony) on keyboards and Greg Putnam (Jam Pain Society) on bass and stick and what these five men have achieved on ‘Elements’ is something that, quite frankly, is little short of spectacular. ‘Elements’ is one of those albums that is stunning from beginning to end: when you buy it for yourselves and have finished enjoying its many merits, you will instantly see why this is easily one of the prog metal high lights of 2012 (my apologies to all at Lion for my delayed review).

‘Elements’ is a thematic album, rather than conceptual, set around (yes you guessed it) the elements, ‘Fire‘, ‘Wind’, ‘Water’ and ‘Earth’, plus a final track titled ‘Quinta Essentia’ which is often said to be the fifth undiscovered element. Each of the five tracks runs at about the ten minutes plus mark, which lets you know that you’re listening to an album filled with songs that have the time, breathing space, emotional depth and maturity to make the most of what this wonderful genre has to offer. So instead of telling you a little something about every track on the CD, if I may, I’d like to concentrate on just one song: the enigmatic ‘Wind’. Beginning with a two minute intro section that showcases the musical abilities of this amazing band, STS then begin to weave a tale of seafaring adventures that utilize strange time signatures, multifaceted guitar passages, amazing bass and drum runs and some of the best vocals it’s been my pleasure to hear in ages. The song also boasts a host of melodies that will keep any lover of great rock music more than satisfied. The music on ‘Wind’ at times is hard edged and conjures up melodic visions that encompass the many sweeping movements of the song, sometimes at a frantic pace. Yet when the band slow things down the more melancholic, sombre and thoughtful aspects of the song take over. ‘Wind’ is, to put it bluntly, sheer progressive metal class.

Despite only telling you about just one song from ‘Elements’, the rest of the tracks are equally as worthy and deserve a review all of their own. Speaking To Stones have a bit of a monster on their hands and even though they aren’t as well known as some of the other acts I have mentioned, with this superb release they should be regarded as a band who could be the next big name in progressive metal.
