They've still to deliver a truly great record but they're really not that far away.

US melodic hard rockers Tango Down certainly haven't had an easy ride in the last seven years, particularly as far as vocalists are concerned. For their 2005 debut 'Take 1', guitarist Scott 'Rif' Miller, bassist Chris Konys and drummer Keith 'Bam Bam' Michaels enlisted the services of renowned Canadian Phil Naro, but by 2009s ‘Damage Control’ they had switched to an unknown, Alex Barbeiri, at the mic. The end of 2012 sees yet another singer on their third album and one that should be familiar to fans of the genre; ex-Accept/Bangalore Choir vocalist David Reece, and what a fine job he does too.

Skipping over the unfortunate choice of artwork given recent events (I mean firearms in schools, not hot redheads!), 'Identity Crisis' is another sharp and sassy album with a satisfyingly tight production from Bombay Black pair Erik Johnson and Ty Sims. Reece's raspy vocals and Miller's taut riffs give opener 'Crying To Me' a rather misleading Guns N' Roses vibe and nothing else on the album rocks quite as hard, with more melodic verses and even prominent keyboard embellishments on 'Corners Of My Mind' and the excellent 'Alone'; whilst the lighter 'Back To Life' and the commercial 'Enlighten Me' give parts of the album an almost AOR feel, although Reece's gritty vocals do steer it away from being too sugary sweet. Highlights are the accessible 'Dream Child' with its Van Halen-esque riff, the irresistible shuffle beat of Erik Johnson's own 'Heart's Catch Fire', and 'Magic Pudding', which despite the silly title is a swaggering twelve bar blues romp that ends the album with a bit of a twist.

With 'Identity Crisis', Tango Down have delivered probably their best set of songs yet; the first-rate vocals of David Reece giving the band a different feel to their previous releases. They also have the good sense to mix things up in the co-writing department, with Guardian's Jamie Rowe, Eden's Curse bassist Paul Logue, Christian Tolle and freelance writer Jace Pawlak (here on his second Tango Down record having also contributed songs to other Kivel acts Farcry and Goodbye Thrill) all collaborating with Miller or Reece, whilst Johnson himself contributes keys, backing vocals and an occasional rhythm guitar.

They've still to deliver a truly great record but they're really not that far away.
