A challenging, entertaining, intriguing and above all else bloody good album.

If you’re a fan of European progressive metal then the name of Bjorn Eliasson might be known to you already. Starting out in the band called Doctor Weird, Eliasson soon left that band to link up with fellow Weird guitarist Patrik Svard with whom he formed Cloudscape. He wrote and performed on the first two Cloudscape albums ‘Crimson Skies’ and ‘Global Drama’ before leaving that band to concentrate on his own musical vision.

This vision became the presently discussed ‘His Blood Is Yours’ and Bjorn describes the music on the album as a mixture of doomy, theatrical, symphonic, atmospheric melodic progressive metal. Eliasson decided that to complete the album as he wanted it to be, he had to firstly not work to a timescale or deadline and secondly he had to just concentrate on writing, playing and recording the best music he possibly could. Joining him on vocals to help create this atmosphere are a number of guest singers including Mike Andersson (Cloudscape), Andre Mollestam (growls) and Sussi Sorensen, Sara Andersson and Thomas Bursell (of the Helsingborg Symphony Choir); who have all helped to drive the dramatic musical world of Warnot to its logical conclusion.

The music is full of shadowy, dark and sinister songs that draw the listener into the ghostly, melancholic world of its creator and the powerfully heavy riffs that can be found on ‘Raptures Of The Deep’, ‘The Crow Will Die’, ‘A Late Dance With Death’, ‘I Am A Ghost’ and ‘Sirens’, show a band that are not afraid to be very heavy yet also very melodic at the same time. I especially like the tracks ‘His Blood Is Yours’ which has a lot of time changes redolent of Threshold and deeply resonant vocals reminiscent of Dan Swano of Nightingale on it; ‘R.I.P’ because of Mike Andersson’s singing and Eliasson’s clever guitar work; the superb ‘New York’ where the joining of male vocal growls to gothic female vocals, really makes the song stand out and gives it a whole different style and structure, than your usual run of the mill prog metal song and finally ‘The Patriot’ which has a lot to thank Kamelot for, especially in the way that the vocals and guitars are arranged within the song.

Bjorn Eliasson and Warnot have assembled a challenging, entertaining, intriguing and above all else bloody good album – one that the progressive metal aficionados amongst our readers (who like to try something a little different) will, I am sure, really enjoy listening to. I know that I did.
