Fans of guitar-orientated albums will absolutely adore this.

Guitar instrumental albums are not amongst the most sought after ones to review here at Fireworks and Rocktopia, but when they are as tasty as this debut clearly is, then what might otherwise be considered a chore for a reviewer becomes much more of a pleasure.

Seattle native Brian Hunsaker began playing guitar in 1990, cutting his teeth on the works of Joe Satriani, Iron Maiden and Dio. Throughout the nineties he continued to practice and write Rock and Metal orientated songs. However, unable to find the right singer for his material, and decided to take vocal coaching lessons, and went on to front his own band Sunny Sinister, but eventually became disillusioned with singing, and turned his focus to creating instrumental guitar music, and ‘Across The Galaxy’ is his debut release.

I’d like to be able to explain to you Brian’s phrasing techniques, and how many barre and diminished chords he uses within each track, but I’d be completely out of my depth – hey, I drive a car but I ain’t no mechanic. But let’s cut to the chase, Brian is obviously a huge talent, that much is obvious from the outset, and he delivers his tunes with the utmost passion and style, and though he has fire, he tempers it wisely and doesn’t display the need to wring out a million notes a minute. His Heavy Metal influence is clearly evident on the more riff-driven material like ‘Blue Angel’, ‘Gila Monster’, ‘At Nebula’s End’ and ‘Atlantis Rising,’ while the likes of ‘Into Orbit’, ‘The Voyage’ and ‘Spring Break’ are lighter in approach, and prove Brian has an ear for melody. Unfortunately, unless you’re a huge connoisseur of guitar instrumentals the lines tend to get blurred after a while with the endless soloing, and there’s little to distinguish between the separate tracks. It’s the beautiful Classical guitar on closing track ‘Farewell To The King’ that stands out the most for me, as it’s completely different to everything that’s gone on before.

The production is top-notch, and Brian also handles all the bass, keyboards and drum programming. Fans of guitar-orientated albums will absolutely adore this – however, I regret, it’s not my personal cup of tea!
