Stunning third album from the Fins.

The Leverage debut, ‘Tides’, released in 2006, blew me away with a set of powerfully melodic songs and faultless performances. Sophomore effort, ‘Blind Fire’, released two years later, was a slightly darker affair but still retained ‘Tides’ quality. Just eighteen months later and the same line-up have completed work on album number three, the curiously titled ‘Circus Colossus’ and it’s as if ‘Tides’ and ‘Blind Fire’ were just teasers, a brief taste of what the band were truly capable of. This disc has not left the CD player in my car for the best part of two weeks now, I keep reaching towards the eject button but at the last second always withdraw my hand and decide to leave well alone.....yes it’s that good! Everything Leverage have created in the last three years has simply been taken to a higher level. The songs, the playing and the production are of such a standard that I’m already worried about album number four paling in comparison.
The atmospheric introduction, ‘Rise’, raises expectations suitably before ‘Wolf And The Moon’ comes crashing from the speakers. Basically a five minute summary of the rest of the album, it exemplifies Leverage’s musical ethic and leaves an impression that lasts for another forty-plus minutes until the final strains of closing track ‘Broken Wings’. Overblown orchestrations and bombastic arrangements, synonymous with the likes of Nightwish, enhance a set of songs, written in the main by guitarist Tuomas Heikkinen, that will leave you breathless with their immediacy. Brother Firetribe singer Pekka Heino is assured and commanding in his delivery, possibly his most effective performance to date and his effortlessly comfortable tone is the perfect compliment to the material. The interplay between guitarists Heikkinen & Torsti Spoof and keyboard player Marko Niskala is simply stunning at times and is a strong feature throughout the whole of ‘Circus Colossus’. If proof were needed then simply check out the rampaging ‘Prisoners’ or the melody overload of ‘Revelation’. Some of the riffs are brutally heavy but only serve to intensify the power that each song generates. Every track has a hook to die for and the likes of ‘Movie Gods’, ‘Worldbeater’ and ‘Rider Of Storm’ contain a mesmerising barrage of harmonies begging for your attention.
The production, courtesy of Heikkinen, Spoof & Jari Mikkola, gives the album an epic quality without becoming totally over the top, and though in essence containing only eight ‘real songs’ never do you feel short changed in terms of value for money. If you were a fan of Leverage after the first two albums then believe me... you’re gonna shit a brick when you hear this!
