Having ex-Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey and drummer Dan Thompson on board, gives you an indication of the flighty, space-prog rock Pre-Med play.

Having ex-Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey and drummer Dan Thompson on board, gives you an indication of the flighty, space-prog rock Pre-Med play. Now on their third album, some members have departed but as long as Danny Faulkner, lead singer/lyricist is there then you can expect to hear the sound that makes them identifiably Pre-Med. Even Davey had in fact left the band but came back to lend a hand in the recording of this record in the studio.

The result is chugging heavy rock riffs driven by an urgent rhythm section, atmospheric keyboards, electronic splurges and Faulkner's mind-bending space rock lyrics and a mix of music that is a meteor storm of rock, prog, space rock and hypnotic passages. Faulkner's vocals are an acquired taste, a little like Kevin Moore of OSI and Chroma Key, but his diction isn't as clear. As a result, it's hard to make out his complicated lyrics, lessening the ability to truly connect to the songs without resorting to the accompanying CD booklet.

The vocals and the chugging riffs suggest Pre-Med's spaceship is more the Han Solo rusty hull that still gets you where you want to go rather than the sleek state-of-the-art Starship Enterprise. Even if the thrusters don't engage fully from the off, the record finds its way as the record goes on. The keyboards on 'The Robonaut Project' add welcome atmosphere that lifts this track above what had preceded it and the title track has a stronger hook than the earlier songs. The record puts on its boosters for the best track of all – 'Biosphere' – that gives you the feeling of drifting, weightless through space. The tracks continue to be more compelling on the last third of the record. There's a good solo on 'The Stargazer's Apprentice'. Ambience turns to heaviness (with some nice bass playing from Davey) on 'Energise' which has a strong gravitational pull and the lighter, closing instrumental 'Event Horizon' has a wide-screen appeal that apes 2001: A Space Odyssey in feel.

These last few tracks help ensure a safe re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere for Pre-Med. Space isn't for everyone, but if you share Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory's passion for space, then hitch a ride with Pre-Med as they can transport you there from the comfort of your own armchair.
