Title

An absolute must for anyone with a Rainbow fixation.

Since quitting Steeler to go solo at the end of the 80s, guitarist Axel Rudi Pell seems to have polarised opinions amongst both fans and critics alike. At one end of the scale there are those who think he's the closest in spirit to Ritchie Blackmore and that his work is a continuation of the Rainbow legacy; at the other he's summarily dismissed as an over indulgent wannabe without an original idea to his name... longstanding readers will know to which end of the camp I belong!

That being said, for a while in the middle of the last decade even I thought he'd run aground...fortunately, a brace of superb albums ('The Crest' and the stunning 'Circle Of The Oath') helped to right the ship, and having found form once again now seems the right time for another live album. Coming over a decade after his last such release – 2002's 'Knights Live' set – 'Live On Fire' certainly showcases a band as sharp and committed as ever.

Recorded at a single sold-out show in Cologne last October on the highly successful 'Circle Of The Oath' tour, 'Live On Fire' is about as authentic a Pell experience as you'll get without buying a ticket and going to see them for real! "Guaranteed to contain no f***ing overdubs" (or so the promo blurb would have us believe), this is a warts and all representation of the show just as it went down that night ... hell, close your eyes for a moment and you can even sense the acrid stench of the dry ice as it permeates your nostrils!

With Johnny Gioeli acting as our ringmaster, the band power effortlessly through a mouth-watering selection of songs both old and new. Of course, an Axel Rudi Pell show wouldn't be a show without the main man being given the opportunity to put his guitar through its paces on occasion (more than one to be honest!), but to these ears that just adds to the authenticity of the whole experience. Segueing tracks together in an effort to cram as much in as possible – as well as effortlessly incorporating cherished standards like 'Whole Lotta Love' and 'Mistreated' – this is the most believable Pell live release yet!

Available on DVD, CD and LP (or combinations thereof), this is an absolute must for anyone with a Rainbow fixation.
