Another stellar release from a band I personally consider to be up there with the best.

Several current releases this issue* have literally bowled me over and just when I was sure things couldn't get any better, Napalm delivers the knockout punch and only goes and releases a new Delain album. The immortal Star Trek words "I dunno if she can take much more Capn" comes to mind. I know some are already fairly enamoured with the Dutch outfit, I myself make no secret that they are my favourite band with a singer I rate as mesmerizing.

Well I say new album, actually this is more of a surprise present full of goodies. 'Interlude' is exactly what the title suggests in that it is a stop gap of different bits until their first full Napalm release. Of course a full album of new songs is always craved and preferred but 'Interlude' still has plenty to offer. These sorts of releases usually consist of demos and unfinished songs...not here. Every song is complete to album standard and that in itself raises this above other similar efforts. The retail version also comes with a DVD, as well featuring exclusive live footage and clips from the band's career.

Musically 'Interlude' starts with the two new tracks 'Breath On Me' and 'Collars And Suits', which are both excellent, and the latter is fast becoming one of my Delain favourites. The gorgeous ballad 'Are You Done With Me' appears in its single remix format whilst the slowed down version of 'We Are The Others' deserves a mention for being a beautiful rendition. The three covers included are 'Such A Shame' (Talk Talk), 'Cordell' (The Cranberries) and a sumptuous version of Bronski Beat's 'Smalltown Boy'. The album closes out with six choices from their 2012 Metal Female Voices Fest performance including 'Get The Devil Out Of Me', and 'Invidia'. The songs are full of energy and power and a fine example of Delain on the live stage. I know from experience Charlotte Wessels is great fun to watch and that enthusiasm comes across well in these recordings.

As an acknowledged massive fan of Delain, I think this is a brilliant album but I honestly think it's a cracker even if you're not. In fact, this is actually a perfect introduction to Delain given its mixture of studio and live tracks as well as the DVD. Wessels continues to shine ever brighter as a vocalist and this gives listeners a chance to hear her delicious vocals in both live and studio scenarios, as well as giving her own takes on some covers. The guitars are colossal as always and Martijn Westerholt's keys/arrangements are as bombastic as ever. As for the production values, well it's pretty much faultless. If you're already a fan, this is certainly worth your hard earned cash especially with the DVD. If you're not, then why not grab a copy and find out what all the fuss is about. This is another stellar release from a band I personally consider to be up there with the best.
