Title

A quality album full of AOR prowess.

Laneslide, the brainchild of guitarist and producer Bruno Kraler, has just released its debut album entitled 'Flying High'. Joining the high octane band is Frank Vestry (Marcello/Vestry, Last Temptation) on vocals and Alessandro Del Vecchio (Lionville) on keyboards. Completing the band on bass is John Billings (Rick Springfield) and Dominik Hülshorst, the former drummer of Bonfire.

The album is pure unadulterated AOR with multi-layered vocals (indeed, Erik Mårtensson and Michael Bormann are on backing vocals) and the lead vocal performance is the definition of stratospheric. The opening and title track sets the store out for the band with the aforementioned vocal attack, keyboard heavy backing and a melodic but piercing guitar solo. The track 'Dancing Girls', which appears half way through the album, is on this magazine's free CD and it is fairly typical of the album with a very heavy keyboard presence. A very bright production enhances the intense vocal and there is a sense of nostalgia in the music, which points back to an 80s heritage, but there is also a modern feel linked in.

Interestingly, I was worried for a while; there is a cover of Laura Branigan's ´Self Control´. Certainly it underlines the 80s vibe to the album and on balance it works, but it remains an unusual choice for inclusion. Laneslide are on track the majority of the time though, with keyboards taking a starring role and Kraler's guitar providing many a crunching solo; a memorable one being towards the end of 'You Can Make It'. There is a gentle side to the band displayed notably via the piano based ballad, 'Washed Up', which closes the album with a very heartfelt performance from Vestry.

All in all, a quality album full of AOR prowess.
